Discipline

All this talk since the start of the season around if our outside backs are good enough, if we will miss Green, if we have enough leaders on the pitch......

Regardless of the team selections the one thing that will win or lose games is the discipline. So far this season we have given away so much field position with unnecessary penalties. its one thing being aggressive and physical but it needs to be controlled and this season wigan are unable to do that.

If you look at the penalty count against for the game against Hull KR it is no wonder we are struggling to perform.

Hull KR - 8
Wigan - 14

Wigan are the most penalised team so for this season with 29 penalties against.

If those stats are correct then 14 pens against is a disgrace. No wonder we lost. 14 against and you'll lose ant match. That number of pens against us at Cas and there's no point in getting on the bus.
They have to get their leadership team together and tell them to lead, not follow their instincts and get involved in every push and shove incident going.
Trouble is our leadership group has Joel, MicMac & Clubby in it and they are the first to join in. Leadership of worst kind not the best.
Waney, Deacs and Rads have to get this sorted and quick. A repeat at Cas and that's another 2 points gone.

Also Farrell as well is part of the leadership team and his new role as the "enforcer" is detrimental to the team.

Both Joel and Liam have given away 5 penalties each so far this season with only three games gone. That is totally unacceptable and regardless of who the referee is we wont be winning games if this carris on

We have given away far too many stupid and needless penalties this season. We have some seriously daft players when it comes to this.

According to SW in tonights post he says that there is not a problem with teams discipline. I find that totally astounding that he can't see it.

The penalty issue is in part due to fatigue and having to defend our own half / 20 / try line for long periods of games. Teams that control field position and possession concede left penalties. You then throw in frustrated players acting dumb and you are on the back foot every game.

I am confident that doing whatever test, the Wigan players will beat every other SL club in terms of conditioning. The problems is no matter how good our conditioning is when we play and behave dumb we will end up doing twice / three times as much as the opposition and look unfit and exhausted.

That's true CPW but Chester's tactics were to get under Wigan player's skin and up set them and set them up. Pressure the ref and an official like Hicks will give a home team pen.
We fell for Chester's tactics big time. We have to stop.
Whatever our tactics if we indulge in the self centered ego trip of responding to every name calling session or push and shove incident then the pens will keep coming and the losses pile up.
After this first three games from now on I'd fine each player who gave away a pen. Get the leadership group to agree and implement it at Cas.
Discipline is a problem at present. Shaun might not admit it and may be doing something about it.
We are the most penalised team in SL and after all he's
not going to admit our discipline is in crisis and losing us games.
Get the discipline right and a couple of players back and a good season will still be in front of us.

On the bbcweb site it says this:

"We were just dumb with the ball and just not acceptable."

"When we did get the ball, we scored, so it's a hard one to take,
I'm frustrated but the players understand that it is really simple - if we keep hold of the ball, we'll win games and that is what we need to do quickly."

So he's not worked out one reason we don't have the ball is we are giving penalties away?

He doesn't have use colourful language such as "our discipline is in crisis" because the stats make it plain there is an issue to anyone who looks.

A simple acknowledgment that we are giving too many penalties away would at least give the fans some faith he has spotted the issue and is dealing with it.

There is no need to be coy here. He'd not be giving anything away anyone involved in the game doesn't already know.

Actually - when we have the ball we drop it would be more accurate. We score when we have the ball and don't drop it, which is about 20% of the time right now.

IMO we need to work on discipline and ball retention. Which means more conservative tactics, respecting field position and forcing errors from the opposition until we get an attacking set of our own. Then pull out the higher risk plays.
