Wigan Warriors Head Coach Shaun Wane makes two changes for Super 8s Derby with St Helens

Warriors bring in Connor Farrell and Ryan Hampshire for Friday’s game at Langtree Park

Duo replace Dom Manfredi and Taulima Tautai
Wigan Warriors Head Coach Shaun Wane has made two changes to his squad for the Super 8s Derby with St Helens.
The Warriors travel to Langtree Park for the inaugural Super 8s Derby between the two Super League giants.

In two changes from last week’s initial 19-man squad Wane brings in Connor Farrell and Ryan Hampshire. The duo replace Dom Manfredi and the suspended Taulima Tautai.

Matty Bowen, Sean O’Loughlin and Larne Patrick, all late withdrawals for last week’s game with Hull FC, are named in the squad.

Speaking ahead of the game, the Warriors Head Coach said he expects all three players to return.

"I’m confident that Matty, Sean and Larne should all play. They were not rested last week and all had genuine injuries but have all trained this week and look ok."

A win for the Warriors will secure a home semi-final with one week of the regular season to go however Wane is under no illusions as to the size of the task.

"Both teams will desperately want to win this one," he said. "We want to go into the semi-finals in a good manner and on the back of two wins but so will St Helens so we need to make sure we perform to our levels."

Wigan Warriors 19-Man Squad

John Bateman, Matty Bowen, Joe Burgess, Josh Charnley, Tony Clubb, Dom Crosby, Connor Farrell, Ben Flower, Anthony Gelling, Oliver Gildart, Ryan Hampshire, Michael McIlorum, Lee Mossop, Sean O’Loughlin, Larne Patrick, Sam Powell, Matty Smith, Joel Tomkins & George Williams

Referee - Robert Hicks

Tickets for the game are available from the DW Stadium Ticket Office in person and on the Ticket Hotline - image: chrome-extension://lifbcibllhkdhoafpjfnlhfpfgnpldfl/call_skype_logo.png0871 6633 552

Maybe it's just me but I can't see the talent in Connor Farrell

I think that we need to be patient and see if he can develop like his brother. We need to remember that he is only young and has plenty of improvement in him. Only time will tell whether he can make the grade at Wigan.

How can anyone judge him on a couple of games or so in the first team and a situation of not being able to see him in a game at 'reserve' level due to the terrible mistake of having the 'duel registration' system instead of a Under ?s league.

Oh well - another night watching our right-side defence trying to cope with one man on another planet.

Still, I would rather have him defending one of our edges than Walsh or Burns.
We need to get Bateman hammering away at the edges.
I would keep swapping sides with him through the game to let him have a go at both, espcially Walsh.

I agree if John runs at the edges of Stains they will have a really tough night and it will cause panic in the defence as they will expect John to take it to them
