Commemorative plaque unveiled to mark 120 years since first home League game in Wigan

Before last Friday night’s game at the DW Stadium, a commemorative plaque was unveiled at the sight of the Clubs first ever home game.

Today (28th September) see’s 120 years since Wigan took on Tyldesley at Prescott Street in the Northern Union which ended in a 0-0 draw.

The RFL and the sport’s charitable arm Rugby League Cares have erected commemorative blue plaques at the site of all 22 original Northern Union grounds to mark Rugby League’s 120th anniversary.

Warriors director and former fullback Kris Radlinski was on hand to unveil the plaque near the site for the former Prescott Street at the Cricket Street Business Park on Friday afternoon.

Rugby League was founded at a meeting at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29, 1895 when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU to form the Northern Union, the governing body that would become the RFL.

Commenting on the 120 year celebrations, RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood said,

“In a year that we mark Rugby League’s special anniversary it is appropriate to reflect on the long and proud history of a sport that means so much to so many people around the world.

“Rugby League was born of a struggle based upon the right to fair play and that burning desire for equality and openness has resonated across the decades.

“The decisions taken by the game’s founding fathers were bold, dynamic and welcoming, three qualities which are as important and relevant in Rugby League today as they were in 1895.

“As well as celebrating our heroes, this year provides us with an opportunity to acknowledge the debt of gratitude we owe to the people involved in the 22 founder clubs, whose foresight has left a wonderful and indelible legacy"

Hope we celebrate 150th anniversary of 1872 founding in the same way in 1922.

To me, it's important that our pre-1895 history belongs to us, not to the rugby union. We didn't break away to form a new sport in 1895, we broke away to assert our rights as Northerners, as working people, to play rugby, to have a say in how it was run, not to have to doff our caps to our supposed "betters".

Recognising the milestone of 1985 is great but there can be a tendency to imply that it all started then - it didn't. Hull FC celebrated their 150th anniversary this year:
