CLUB OF THE WEEK | ORRELL ST JAMES

A STUNNING YEAR OF SUCCESS...

This week's rugby-league.com Club of the Week is Orrell St James, after their Open Age set-up completed a remarkable 2016 season on Saturday.

The club's A team kicked off the 2016 North West Men's League Finals Day at Widnes Vikings' Select Security Stadium by beating Langworthy Reds 28-8 in the Division 5 final.

That capped off a fine year for the team, as they lost just once on their way to finishing top of the sixth tier, while winning the NWML Shield in September, as they edged out eventual Division 4 champions Eccleston Lions, 36-32.

The club's first team also enjoyed a stunning season, as they finished nine points clear at the top of Division 1, suffering just one league loss and boasting both the best defensive and attacking record in the league.

Though they were knocked out 32-22 by eventual winners Thatto Heath (who made the Premier Division Grand Final) in the NWML Cup back in July, they were able to recover and make the Division 1 final, where they eased past Folly Lane 32-14.

Jack McHugh (2), Kyle Topping, Sam Baggaley, Jake Williams and Dave Kennedy all got over, Daniel Pyke kicking four goals to help see them over the line.

On top of their Open Age success, they enjoyed a trio of Division 2 successes, with their under 13s, 14s and 16s all finishing top of their respective divisions.

Capping off a remarkable weekend for the club, Orrell product at St Helens star Jonny Lomax made his England debut on Saturday, starring with two assists as Wayne Bennett's men overcame France 40-6 in Avignon ahead of the Four Nations, while they picked up the Give Back to Your Club Award at the Community Awards earlier in October.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
