Wigan Warriors to launch women's team
Wigan Warriors announced on Wednesday they would launch the club's first women's team.
The new women's team would aim to compete in the Women's Super League in 2018.
The only level three female Rugby League coach, Amanda Wilkinson will head up the new team and the club wants to have an open-age side with the hope of developing a youth development structure in the future.
Wigan Warriors Chairman Ian Lenagan said: "At Wigan we want our women's team to be an important part of the club.
"Amanda Wilkinson is a fantastic coach and a valued member of staff and exactly the kind of person who should be spearheading a project like this. We wish Amanda and everyone involved the best of luck."
Wilkinson, wants to further the reputation of Wigan Warriors with the new women's team.
She said: "Women's Rugby League is developing at a rapid rate and we hope that by launching a team we will inspire even more women to pick up a rugby ball and give the game a go."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Didn't see that one coming!
Good plan by the club to start a Women's RL team and recognise ladies' importance to RL.
Up to now Mum's have been given little credit for the efforts they put in to support their sons in their game from U7s to first team.
Hopefully a Women's team in Wigan will help increase the profile of ladies in the game.
Well done Wigan RL.

The standard of womens' football has improved no end in recent years, no reason why the same can't apply in other sports.

Re: Wigan Warriors to launch women's team
We've had some great women in sport over the years and certainly not awful to watch!
I remember watching a women's match at CP about 20 years ago as a curtain raiser.
Guiseley Ladies were one of the teams and they had a centre better than Gary Connolly!
It's took a long time to reach this point in time, can't knock it.

If its done right, with a good amount of funding them I'm all for it.i just hope it doesn't die a death in a couple of years due to lack of interest.
