Richards In The Centre
Richards In The Centre
According to Millward hes is looking at the moment to play Ricahrds at centre, he doesnt mention Dallas leaving, so its Dallas and Calderwood on the wings.

Re: Richards In The Centre
I think we'll see Richards play in the centre for next season, and then when Dallas leaves we will be looking to bring in a class aussie centre and Richards will revert back to the wing for the 2007 season.
This just shows what a quality buy this guy will be, and i also think we could see him play a number of positions while he is here, and will be very useful if we have another unfortunate injury crisis.

As a winger Richards is notching up some impressive stats and performances down-under.Wizard_Millward posted:

So what do we do? Play him at centre to accomodate Calderwood!
Now that does not seem like a great plan to me. I am not one who thinks Calderwood is rubbish but of the two Richards is I feel the much better winger.
He is doing his stuff in a much harder competition.
I take your point it might only be for one season until Dallas hangs up his boots but this does seem to be going about things the wrong way.
We had two wingers, Dallas and Richards so needed a centre. Yet we sign another winger.
I know Calderwood was available now, not next season but who is to say an equally good or better player would not be available for 2007?
I can only assume the club has been unable to find a decent centre who they can fit under the quota because there is no guarentee Richards will be any good at centre aka Jamie Ainscough.
I just hope playing Richards at centre does not undermine his confidence if things don't go to plan. Look at how Aspinwall went backwards by being played out of position.

"hbe mainly plays wing but he would go great in the centres he is big and fast"
That is a quote from a West Tigers fan, I went on there site and asked what they thought about him playing centre, They see him play week in week out so if they don't know who does?

This is true, but who's to say an equally good or better player would be available for 2007? The club were just playing it safe and getting someone of quality now and not leaving it until next year and finding there is nobody.DaveO posted:

Has anybody on here actually seen Richards play centre? For all we know he could be a top class centre and only playing on the wing to fit in with the rest of his current team.

Re: Richards In The Centre
Richards is a winger.
he can, if needed, cover centre or full-back.
so we buy him to be a centre.
Terry Newton is a hooker, but used to play and sometimes (when wayne comes on) slots in the 2nd row.
that would be like someone signing terry as a 2nd row.
could do the job, but waste of talent.

Re: Richards In The Centre
Very true, but the point I made was that I think we will see Richards on the wing from 2007 for when we will have signed a quality centre for him. The thing is, you have to sign players you want when they become available to you, you can't say, 'oh, well we'll wait a year and then sign him when it suits us', it just doesn't work like that.
I for once, am going to back the club on this move if they can back it up by bringing in a world class centre in 2007 (preferably an english or kolpak player, because we need a quality, aussie half back A.S.A.P.)

I think we will do the opposite for next season a quality Aussie centre and an English/Kolpak halfback. We wont get to what i consider full strength until 2008 season then we will challenge its just a long wait.

Re: Richards In The Centre
I've seen Patty play centre in one or two games. In my opinion he is a much better winger but i think he could do a pretty good job at centre. It's not that he doesn't have the talent to play centre, it's more that because of his speed and skill he makes a better outside man. Playing wing he gets the ball out wide and can fly up the sideline, which is where most his tries are scored. Playing centre i think his use of his speed is more limited. However, saying that, in the last few years he's really improved his strength so he's more than capable of pushing off players and sending his winger away.Wizard_Millward posted:
