Media Coverage

Post by DaiJones »

As someone who works in the media it never ceases to amaze me how shoddy the standards of rugby league's coverage in the press is, especially down here in the capital, the writing and sub editing is not so much sloppy as downright insulting. Just this morning the preview of Leeds Toulouse in the free Metro newspapers on the tube, half the article made references to Toulouse's chances of beating Wigan Warriors in the semi despite carrying a big picture of Tony Smith and starting off with Leeds stuff. Yesterday a piece about Chev walker was accompanied by a picture of rugby union British Lion Andrew Sheridan who couldn't look much less like Chev if he tried! To top it all, go to the BBC Rugby League page today, click on Wigan and you will see the main story is the fact that Slovenian 800m runner Jolanda Ceplak is injured and unavailable. I knew we had injury problems, but I wasn't aware she was even in the squad!

The Daily Mirror RL coverage is poor, in my opinion. They usually get grammar, spellings, names etc correct but the coverage is so small. You'll be lucky to get 1 full page in the sports section devoted to the Super League. :conf:

we get the free wigan reporter every week or summat its free so....ya know like but its poo.....but at least there was a full page devoted to the warriors now this has been reduced to a page for the latics a 1 small collumn for the warriors....it makes me sick. the news hardly covers much no trys nothing just the result .... not good enough. and as for the real papers i have stopped wasting my time searching for the rugby pages .

i e-mailed the bbc and got this back:
Thank you for your message.

Jolanda Ceplak would undoubtedly bring a touch a touch of glamour to the world of rugby league.

She is, nevertheless, committed to athletics and was included on the Wigan index by mistake.

The page has now been removed.

What with "Steve 'Rugby League Ryder'" and Clare Baldwin covering it on the BBC.

Next we'll have Gary Lineker and Lawro

I had BBC GMR rugby league hour on last week coming home from work. Excellent hours rugby debate

They had Alex Murphy and Daniel Anderson on. They also brought in an Ex Referee(Billy Thompson). He held no punches about todays standards with regards to play, attitudes and some tart covering rugby league

His attitude was the Aussies are born winners, you cant move in Sydney harbour for all the 2nd place gongs that have been thrown away.

Absolute disgrace last years Tri Nations final in his opinion

I think that was the point of the original post! Lots of us signed a petition to get the House of Commons to acknowledge the existence of RL in the same way that they support lots of other sport, led by a couple of pro-RL MP's (from RL areas, not surprisingly!) who were annoyed by the way RL was ignored in favour of a certain other sport in media and in public institutions despite the fact RL is the 2nd largest spectator sport in the UK (or was at the time, don't know about now) and its large grassroots infrastructure. It's not exactly made any difference though.

oh ok then. if you ask me there should be a petition to the bbc! there coverage of superleague is pathetic.

the showtimes change all the time

is only in northen areas i think

isnt on freeview (i have to turn to analogue to watch it)

and there isnt much on it!

it seems that the only people that can follow rugby league is the people that can afford sky!
