Clear aim: Williams

George Williams previews Thursday night’s Betfred Super League clash with Wakefield Trinity.
24-year-old says last week’s loss to St Helens can be used to Wigan Warriors’ advantage.
Williams: “Last Friday was a hiccup and I admit I wasn’t very good, and a few senior boys have said that too. We’ve dusted ourselves off and are prepared for a tough test on Thursday.”
George Williams believes Wigan Warriors can use last week’s defeat to St Helens as a spring board to achieve success in 2019, as his side prepare to host Wakefield Trinity on Thursday night.
Last week, the Cherry and Whites lost for the first time in six Betfred Super League games following a 32-10 defeat to St Helens, but stand-off Williams believes it will only benefit his team.
He said: “I think in the last five weeks, minus last Friday, we’ve been building slowly as a team and as individuals. Saints are the benchmark and we admit we didn’t perform to what we have done recently, but it’s good to know what we have to aim towards now.
“Without being arrogant, we genuinely believe we can go all the way. We want to be in those play-off games at the end of the year and we know we may come across Saints, so to be successful we have to put our standards towards what we learned last Friday and be in a place to match them if we come up against them.”
The 24-year-old England international has played in all 24 of Wigan’s games this year and has scored 11 tries.
Williams paid tribute to Head Coach Adrian Lam for getting the best out of him during his side’s winning run.
“In the last month, I think I’ve progressed hugely under Lammy,” he said. “Last Friday was a hiccup and I admit I wasn’t very good, and a few senior boys have said that too. We’ve dusted ourselves off and are prepared for a tough test on Thursday.”
With a number of senior players out of the 19-man squad for this week’s game, Williams says half-back partner Tommy Leuluai will be a big miss.
I love playing next to Tommy. He’s going to be a massive loss for us. He knows the game so well and he’s got similar attributes to Lockers (Sean O’Loughlin) – if you see him on the pitch the whole team has confidence. I’m sure though whoever plays will do the job.”
The two-time Super League Grand Final winner was asked about last week’s news that he will be leaving the Club he joined 12 years ago to join NRL side Canberra Raiders in 2020.
Williams said: “I want to test myself. I’ve been here since I was 12-year-old and Wigan’s been my life. It always will be, as I’ve not known anything. I’ve got a few months left and I’m going to make sure I make the most of it.
“I’m from Wigan, I’ve always supported Wigan, I was a ball boy and I’ve been lucky enough to play for the Club too. It’s something that I will hold close to my heart and won’t take for granted.”
