A Super League record held by Hull FC skipper Danny Houghton was broken last week in the first round of play-off fixtures.
Wigan Warriors’ starlet Morgan Smithies made 72 tackles in their clash with Salford Red Devils on Friday night as Adrian Lam’s side progressed to the play-off semi-finals.
That total is three more than any other player has managed in the Super League era since tackling statistics were first recorded by Opta in 2003.
Houghton previously shared the record with Malcom Alker, both managing 69 tackles in a game. Alker set the record in 2010 while representing Salford and he held it on his own for four years before Houghton drew level with him in 2014, who completed 69 tackles in a game against Widnes.
However, the pair now find themselves in joint-second in the list, behind the 18-year-old Smithies, who has enjoyed a phenomenal breakthrough season at the DW Stadium.
Perhaps unsurprisingly Houghton features heavily on the list of top tacklers since 2003, after hitting 66 tackles or more in a game on five separate occasions throughout his career.
Here’s the list of the top 11:
72 – Morgan Smithies – Wigan Warriors - 20/09/19
69 – Malcom Alker – Salford Red Devils – 25/04/10
69 – Danny Houghton – Hull FC – 23/03/14
