Next month's Challenge Cup Final will be played at Wembley Stadium, the RFL has confirmed.

Wigan are one of four clubs still in the competition, along with Salford, Leeds and holders Warrington. Their double-header semi-finals will take place at St Helens on Saturday October 3, with Leeds-Wigan at 2.30pm and Salford-Warrington at 5pm - both on the BBC.

And the final, two weeks later, will also be televised though it remains to be seen whether the Government will allow the RFL to allow any fans at Wembley. Thosands of tickets have already been sold, says Ralph Rimmer, the RFL chief executive.

He said: "It has remained the fervent wish of the RFL that supporters of the two teams who reach the Final would be able to join them there, as well as the thousands who bought tickets for Wembley before lockdown.

“ However we recognise that public health must remain the priority, and these decisions may be taken out of our hands."

He added: "We are delighted to be able to confirm that the Coral Challenge Cup Final in our 125th anniversary year will be played at Wembley Stadium on Saturday October 17.

“2020 has been a tough year for all for obvious reasons, but it is also a special one for the sport of rugby league – and we have therefore remained determined to do everything possible to ensure a day of celebration as well as reflection at Wembley.

“The fact this will be the 78th Challenge Cup Final at Wembley since the original, visionary decision to take the Final south in 1929 underlines the strength of the relationship between the National Stadium and the sport of Rugby League.“The players of the four clubs who have reached the semi-finals now know what is at stake."

There simply won’t be fans there..even if the trials had gone ahead I’m sure I read somewhere Wembley would be only able to hold 22k.

Time to accept this god forsaken season is over where fans in grounds are concerned.

Can the RFL afford the losses playing at an empty Wembley.
I would think not.

That's why it probably will be played at Wembley. The RFL seem incapable of rational thinking at all times . Why change now.

Penalty fees for cancelling Wembley may outweigh the losses.

Closer to the mark, I'd say. The RFL (rightly) gets a lot of stick from fans, but I find it hard to criticise this year; it's all about just keeping the show on the road. In the event of no crowds, which now looks just about certain, if it had been cheaper to play to an empty stadium at Headingley, say, rather than Wembley, I'm sure they would have done so.

Nah! They wouldn't play the final at Headingley unless Leeds were in it
