Wigan Warriors' support for George Burgess

Wigan will use the off-season to try to “get to the bottom” of the hip injury which ruined George Burgess’ debut campaign with the club.

But Warriors’ executive director Kris Radlinski stressed the club was supporting the England prop after a difficult season.

Burgess arrived with a lot of fanfare as a marquee player but played just eight games, as he battled a persistent hip injury.

He has seen a specialist since the season finished to try and plot a return to full fitness.

Radlinski said: “He’s got an injury which not only impacts on him playing, it’s giving him a lot of pain in life so we need to get to the bottom of it.

“”He saw a surgeon, and there’s also his wellbeing to consider. Our players and staff, they’re not frustrated, they’re concerned (for him).

“I had a very open conversation with him and my job is to support him and we will.”

What did they think was happening last pre season? It was clear to all in his 10 minute stint in the first game he wasn’t right.

They also said mid season he wouldn’t play again until the hip problem was sorted. We saw him again so why is this time any different?

Absolute mess the club have got themselves in with this.

We've all done it. I mean taking a punt on something despite knowing that we might have been wasting our money. There is only one thing for it, stick George Burgess in that draw with all of the crap from JML like the special device for defuzzing clothes and the hand held sewing machine and forget about it. If by some miracle he can play again then wayhey!!! and if not, least said soonest mended.

I think everything has been said that needs to be surrounding Burgess now. Its getting a little boring.

For me, the proof is in the pudding - that is IF Burgess returns to the playing field, lets review his first few performances. I wouldn't expect him to set the world alight in his first game back, but what will be evident is if his injury is still impacting him (which will be obvious to a blind man).

The latest statement also suggest the club are willing to support him fully (meaning he wont be released unless he retires through injury). Hopefully this could indicate its not all doom and gloom as some of us think (me included).

Would you not be on sick leave if it was an illness/injury?

It is obvious from comments made by Sam Burgess, on Rugby AM, at the beginning of last season, that it was known George had this hip problem, so why did we sign him in the first place, seems a very poor decision.
It was obvious early on that there were problems, so he should have had surgery straight away, not wait until this off season.
Looking at it, it would appear that he probably needs a hip replacement.
He will never be fit again.
He shouldn't be still at the club, we could have kept Greenwood.

We don’t what was in his contract, or whether we have insurance in place, so have no idea whether his not playing is all the club’s problem, or not. The key bit here is that Rads has gone public with the suggestion that this problem goes beyond whether he can play. This puts the prospect of his retirement front and centre, as one very possible outcome is that he may have to retire for his own good. It also throws up the possibility that he might never properly recover. I hope that 1) this gets sorted quickly, 2) he retires if there is a risk either playing on would make matters worse and 3) only plays if he can be effective and won’t be storing up more trouble for the future.

It is probably the wrong way to put it, but from we have seen, I hope he retires and makes enough of a recovery to have a pain free retirement.

Oh, and I don’t see a link with Greenwood. Looking at the range of issues we have had with him over the last 2 years (in particular around head injuries, that ever more important issue for the game), and that we will have Isa, Farrell, Bateman, Smithies and Partington (and Havard?) seemingly vying for second row positions, letting him go seems sensible to me.
