Rugby league has hit the headlines for the wrong reasons in months gone by, with claims that the sport is stagnating on and off the field.

But, former chairman of the now defunct Chorley Borough club and ardent Warrington fan Sir Lindsay Hoyle – who is also the current Speaker in the House of Commons – has called for an independent review into the state of the sport.

“I think we’re at a crossroads and the pandemic hasn’t helped the situation,” Hoyle said.

Rugby league without doubt is a game you can get so much out of, but how do you sell this sport? Communication going forward is important, it needs to be brought together.

“The amateur game needs to be grown in different parts of the UK and we need to make it a game that isn’t just watched in the north.

The Speaker has also called for the inclusion of more voices to set out a brighter future for the game.

“We’ve got to reinvent the passion for the game, but also sell it broader than what we do,” he said.

I think it’s always worth listening to other people.

“I think an independent review does no harm. No-one has got all the ideas, I think there are many ideas that can come out by working together. And you need the best of those ideas to take the sport forward.

We’re not the top game in this country, but we do have the best game in this country.

“So how do we get that higher level of support and higher level of commitment?

Let’s listen to different people. Let’s get different people focusing, putting their mind to it, and coming out with the best ideas.”

You would hope that it gets acted upon this time

now, more than ever it feels like something needs to be done. Club chairmen are speaking out and players are speaking out about decisions made during the game. So along with the fans, it seems that virtually all interested parties arent happy.

you would hope that the players are consulted from a playing perspective (not holding my breath though) as to how they want the actual game to move forwards (more games, less games, shoulder charge, play of ball, player welfare etc etc) and from the off the pitch perspective what should the structure look like, how is the game marketed, TV deal(s) etc etc

there is so much that can be looked at and improved, and this really does feel like the last chance or is the game heading for part time / amateur status as it just doesnt feel sustainable in the current climate

A review would include refereeing standards but much more it will be about Funding with tv deals and sponsorship. Structure and whether the composition of one Governing body, number of leagues, P & R or licensing. Youth set up scholarship or community clubs for development of younger players.

Those are some of the aspects I'd expect to see in a review.

Members of the Review Panel will be crucial and that will define its success or not and its implementation or not.

There have been far too many reviews which simply get welcomed then ignored I see no reason that the vested powers that be and I’m looking at ALL club chairmen/owners would ever think another one would be any different.

As for the RFL well they need a clear out fullstop any governing body that can be bullied as easily as they where over the academies isn’t fit for purpose

What we need is the public to recognize a face from RL------ football, Rugby Union, Cricket etc have faces to recognize even its only in adverts we cant do this because of the Salary cap which should not come into it as its money made away from playing RL. Salary cap should be only calculated on players wages from the respected clubs not what they earn away from the game if Sam Tomkins wants to model for Matalan this should not be taken in to account. Funny no player has taken the RFL to court about this before.

when Gillette sponsored the test series / tri nations previously we had Faz / Scully on their adverts / billboards

its not rocket science to allow players to earn money outside of the game. The majority have a social media presence now, and could earn decent money from that if they were allowed to

this is only 1 small thing that could change to allow the players to earn a far better salary than they do now. For professional sportsmen, they are criminally underpaid compared to football / RU players
