Incoming forward pass technology could change the game of rugby league

Finally, it seems as though the forward pass debate could soon be coming to an end.

The NRL are set to trial two new technologies later this season to determine whether a pass is thrown forward or not.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported back in May that the NRL has received two approaches from different companies, whose inventors believe they can definitively determine whether a pass has been thrown forward or not.

One of those is Sportable who, based in London, uses the method of inserting a microchip into the ball to track whether the ball leaves a players’ hands forwards or backwards.

The other technology uses limb-tracking technology to determine whether the trajectory of the pass goes forward or back.

NRL head of football Graham Annesley confirmed both methods will be trialled this season to see how they fare out on the pitch.

“It’s very early stages,” Annesley said.

“All we have agreed to at this stage is a trial of the technology in training matches to determine whether the technology meets our needs. If we’re convinced it is accurate and suitable, we would need to build a business case to take to the commission.”

The developments have been ongoing for the past three months, with excitement growing all the time.

would be interesting to see if RU were looking at this too? Quickly googled and the only references are to the NRL

i know they are 2 different games, but the costs for implementing or using would surely be reduced if both RL and RU got on board with it.

i would assume it will be like goal line technology in football with a quick light / ping in the refs ear if a pass is forward. the only danger is that it could make the game very stop / start if it picks up every single forward pass

Sounds unlikely to work IMO. Limb position is extremely difficult to track accurately, and therw is more going on than the absolute position of the ball which is all you'd get with a ball sensor. Might take a good few iterations to get a solution that's accurate enough to be usable.

In union they allow the VR to rule on forwards passes, though. Never understood why we can't do the same. If it's too tight to call, the VR can always go back to the on-field decision.

The sport is too poor here to even have proper cameras at every game.

Do they have more camera angles to make a better judgement?

Getting farcical now we will be referee'd by micro chips shortly .

Our overnight trips down will soon be 2 night trips by the time we go through all the technology replays. It will be daylight by the time a 8pm ko game finishes.

We can’t even afford to have video refs at all games, there’s no way this will be implemented

As far as I can tell, based only only on watching highlights shows on Channel 5 or wherever it is, they certainly don't seem to have NRL-level facilities. No better than SL, I wouldn't have thought. But like I said, they always have the option of reverting to the on-field decision.
