Wheelchair fixtures announced

Post by josie andrews »

The Betfred Wheelchair Super League fixtures for 2022 have been announced as Wigan Warriors prepare to make their debut in the competition.

The Warriors Wheelchair team join the competition alongside Warrington Wolves as new teams in the league. They will be joined in a seven-team competition by 2021 champions Leeds Rhinos, as well as Halifax Panthers, Hull FC, North Wales Crusaders and a brand-new name for the sport in London Roosters – a southern ‘super team’ built on the strong foundations of Wheelchair Rugby League in Medway, Kent.

The competition will kick off on the weekend of 5-6th March, with the Rhinos launching their title defence against the Crusaders, Warrington taking on Hull FC, and two of the new teams clashing as Wigan face London.

There will be six rounds of fixtures before the competition splits, with the top four teams qualifying for a Super 4 League leading to the Grand Final in the autumn – which has already been confirmed for live coverage on Sky Sports, after the success of last year’s historic first for Wheelchair Rugby League. The purpose is to ensure that the players are competing in high intensity fixtures leading up to the World Cup at the end of the year.

The bottom three teams will join leading clubs from the Wheelchair RL Championship – with further details to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

The Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup, also won by Leeds in 2021, will kick off with a Festival in April, with the Final set for June – and discussions are also at advanced stage for England Wheelchair to play a Mid-Season International to continue their World Cup preparations.

The venue for Wigan’s home fixtures will be confirmed in due course. Tickets for the games will also be confirmed as soon as possible.

Here are the Warriors Wheelchair fixtures for 2022:

Round 1 v London Roosters (H), Saturday 5th March, 10am K.O.
Round 2 v Warrington Wolves (H), Saturday 12th March, 10am K.O.

Round 3 v Halifax Panthers (A), Sunday 20th March, 10am K.O.
Round 4 v North Wales Crusaders (A), Saturday 2nd April, 10am K.O.

Round 6 v Hull FC (H), Saturday 28th May, 10am K.O.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
