He was a favourite of the writer Colin Welland who talked about his rare talent and as an example of how RL brought players in purely because of their talent. I always liked RL as a southern kid not just because of its appeal as a game but also that it seemed as if everyone was welcomed into the game.
I remember Welland saying that he thought Green Vigo sounded like a tropical spider but what a player he was!

I remember whenGreen was at Swinton and a newly relegated Wigan faced them at.StationRd.on I think on Boxing Day With Vigo and Danny Wilson in the side they ran us ragged(They always were our problem side,all those Wigan lads.)What happened to GreenVigo happened to most players ,in. Those times when the clubs decided your time was up.Most players could just go home but forGreen it was different.I hope he can be persuaded to join us again.

There’s a very interesting interview with Green Vigo in this week’s League Express. He talks about his background in South Africa before joining Wigan and opens up on his problems with alcohol later in his career. It was good to read that he gave up alcohol many years ago. It’s also apparent from the interview that he wasn’t treated too well by Wigan under the ownership regime in the 1970’s.
Sadly, he says that he didn’t attend his close friend, Bill Ashurst’s, funeral because he didn’t feel confident about how he would be accepted. I’m unsure whether Green has attended any of the heritage games but he is surely someone that the club should try to bring back into the fold. He gave those of us old enough to have watched Wigan in the seventies some fine memories when we didn’t have the greatest teams. He would surely receive a warm welcome from our fans.

Are there any other wigan players that have a street named after them, I am presuming Vigo Street in New Springs was named after him, unless anyone can confirm otherwise

I think Vigo Street was there long before Green signed for Wigan.....might be wrong, but I don't think so...

I seem to remember Green making his debut in the Wigan Sevens along with John Gray who was an England RU hooker. A goal kicker who went to Australia.
The Wigan Sevens were always an exciting time for me. Played in the sun as the new season was about to begin.
