Leeds Rhinos star banned as St Helens, Leeds & HKR players charged
THE Disciplinary Match Review Panel weren’t at their busiest following the weekend’s action but five players have still been charged.
Following the latest round of Betfred Super League fixtures, the Match Review Panel have issued the following sanctions:
James McDonnell (Leeds Rhinos) – Grade D Punching – 2 Match Penalty Notice & £250 Fine
Sione Mata’utia (St Helens) – Grade A Dangerous Contact – £250 Fine
Nene McDonald (Leeds Rhinos) – Grade A Other Contrary Behaviour – Not Applicable
Sauaso Sue (Hull KR) – Grade A Raising Knee in Tackle – £250 Fine
King Vuniyayawa (Salford Red Devils) – Grade B High Tackle – £250 Fine
The charge means that McDonnell will miss Leeds’ fixture against Castleford Tigers at the Magic Weekend on Saturday as well as the Rhinos’ visit to Wakefield Trinity the week after.

Just what I thought! I opened this thread thinking, he'll be due for a ban for sure.

Super League clash cited a whopping 17 times by disciplinary
Leeds Rhinos’ battle with St Helens on Friday night was as controversial and fierce as you will ever see in Super League and showed why rugby league, even when teams aren’t executing as well as they should, is still the greatest game of all.
It was a real fiery affair and subsequently it is no surprise to see the fixture cited 17 times by the match review panel.
James McDonnell is responsible for two of those. The Leeds backrow avoided a ban for dangerous contact but is the only player suspended this week as he was hit with a two match ban for punching
Teammate Richie Myler also avoided a dangerous contact charge whilst Sam Walters and Tom Holroyd avoided bans despite being cited twice. Myler was also cited twice.
James Roby and Tommy Makinson were among those cited by St Helens. Makinson avoided a ban for disputing a decision as he “walked away immediately after being spoken to be the official.”
Ash Handley meanwhile was also cited as was French teammate Justin Sangare.
Sione Mata’utia was fined for his below the knees tackle on Mikolaj Oledzki which yielded a yellow card. He was cited twice as well.
Teammates Curtis Sironen and Joey Lussick were also cited by the panel.
Like Mata’utia and McDonnell, Leeds star Nene MacDonald was charged. The centre/wing was charged for other contrary behaviour but received no punishment.

Operational Rules Tribunal – May 30
James McDonnell of Leeds Rhinos has successfully appealed against a Grade D charge of punching in last Friday’s Betfred Super League fixture against St Helens.
McDonnell had been charged by the Match Review Panel on the basis of evidence from the match officials.
HHJ Sarah Wright, who chaired the Operational Rules Tribunal, explained the decision as below:
“We directed ourselves in accordance with the appropriate burden and standard of proof namely that the Compliance Manager bears the burden of proof and has to establish that the misconduct has occurred to the reasonable satisfaction of the tribunal bearing in mind the seriousness of the allegation. The standard of proof is greater than a mere balance of probability but less than proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
“We reviewed footage including a substantial amount of footage that had not been broadcast and footage which had not been seen by the Match Review Panel.
“The player together with Matt Cook [Leeds Rhinos General Manager] took us through a detailed analysis of the footage. It showed beyond doubt that Jonny Lomax was injured and bleeding heavily before the incident involving James McDonnell.
“No punch can be seen on the footage, and it was conceded by the RFL Compliance Manager on behalf of the Match Review Panel that the footage was inconclusive. We were able to view the incident from a number of angles and did not see a punch thrown.
We accept entirely that the touch judge was genuinely certain that at the time he saw a punch. However, he was not able to point out the punch on the footage. We cannot rule out the fact that he may have been genuinely mistaken and therefore cannot be satisfied to the appropriate standard that a punch was thrown and we allow the appeal.”

I just couldn't see a punch or even a grab - very odd and probs cost Leeds the game.

Folk going mad on Twitter not just about the officiating of the game & this incident but about Lomax allowing a player to be sent off for "a non punch" on him & not telling the referee that he hadn’t been punched.
I wonder if Lomax will see some sort of punishment for his withholding of evidence & just blatantly cheating! Bringing the game into disrepute??

I was watching the game on sky and it does seem Lomax asks about the punch..the punch that now seems wasn’t a punch not a good look at all
