Smith was knocking them over from the touchline for the academy and did the same for England recently so the ability is there. I remember reading that Briers had him practicing his kicking while the rest of the team were taking a breather between drills so that he was practicing his kicks while stressed like in a match situation. Maybe he has stopped practicing this way in favour of spending time practicing by himself post training.
