On Saturday 2nd September 2023 Wigan Warriors held their annual Scholarship Launch night as the newest players to enter the Warriors system were celebrated.
Head of Youth Shane Eccles opened the night speaking about the scholarship programme, what it involves and what the players and their families should expect over the next two years as scholarship players.
He said: “This is an evening of pride and celebration for the players, their families, coaches and teachers who have helped them develop to gain this opportunity. It’s fantastic to see so many faces together at the club supporting the players and showing the pride they have in the players achievement. This is an evening that the whole youth department looks forward to as we celebrate the young players starting their journey into becoming a professional player.
“Our recruitment team do a fantastic job scouring the country looking for talented players that can add value to our programme and that we believe have the potential to develop into future first team players this group of players represent 22 schools and 12 community clubs.”
Harry Smith and Brad O’Neill were also in attendance to speak to the players about their journey from scholarship to first team players and shared some of their best memories with the players. They had some words of advice for the players with the main message of the night being work hard and enjoy it.
This was then followed by introductions of scholarship staff who discussed their roles within the programme and what the players and parents should expect from them.
The evening concluded with a speech from First Team Head Coach Matt Peet to discuss how important our player development pathway is for the future of the club and also some wise words to the players to enjoy every moment of being a Wigan Warriors player. Each player was then welcomed onto stage to officially sign their scholarship alongside Matt

Warriors announce 2024 Scholarship squad
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
