Peet Previews Leigh

Matt Peet looks ahead to Friday’s Betfred Super League Round 27 game against Leigh Leopards.

Peet: “I don’t need to tell the players the importance as they’ll know that finishing top is fantastic, but that it’s a step on the way to what we want.”

Leigh Leopards v Wigan Warriors, Friday 22 September, Leigh Sports Village, 8pm K.O.

Matt Peet spoke to the press on Tuesday afternoon as the Warriors prepare to face Leigh Leopards in the final round of the regular Super League season.

Reflecting on the Warriors’ victory over Castleford Tigers last time out, Peet said: “It was a good night’s work as for most the game we were very tidy and scored some quality tries. We also came through healthy so overall it was a positive night.”

When asked on changes ahead of Friday’s clash against Leigh Leopards, Peet said: “If you watched us train and sat in meetings you’d see it’s business as usual. We don’t have a lot to change as we’re healthy and have been playing some good rugby, so we know how we want to play and how we want to apply ourselves.”

Speaking on the importance of Friday night, Peet said: “It’ll be a big game for several reasons. It’s a local derby, it will be an intense atmosphere, there’s a lot of pride at stake, and there’s a trophy on the line. The performance will be secondary this week and the result is everything – we have to win.”

On Leigh Leopards, Peet said: “They’ve come from the Championship and really attacked the competition, and what Leigh have added they should be really proud. They have some of the best players and one of the best coaches in Super League, and they’re genuinely a play-off quality team – it’s no fluke what they’ve done.”

More than 3,000 Warriors will be in attendance at Friday night’s sell out, and on the support, Peet said: “Our fans are up for it as we have the chance of winning a trophy. The fans have been awesome and we couldn’t do what we are doing without their support – hopefully they’re proud of the team at the moment.”

On winning the League Leaders’ Shield, Peet said: “There’s the honour, satisfaction and pride from winning the trophy as a reward for our consistency, but as well it’s the best pathway through the play-offs. It’s the path we want but we have to keep playing well and keep winning. The trophy is fantastic, but equally the chance to get a home semi-final down the line is massive as well.

“We’ve put ourselves in such a great position and now have to take that opportunity. I don’t need to tell the players the importance as they’ll know that finishing top is fantastic, but that it’s a step on the way to what we want.”

Solid half we are on top and I feel we can win this. Jamie Jones is incomprehensible sadly.

How did Nsemba obstruct when he ran straight through with minimal contact to defenders?

Absolute joke of a decision.

In game management is shocking.

Why are we trying to offload in stupid positions?
