I think last year was his first year proper in the academy and he also played the odd reserve game. I'm sure he played scholarship and academy in 2022.

Im not really arsed about squad numbers. They are insignificant in the modern game.Im sure the players priorities are staying fit and in the first team

A few things strike me about this: first, we don’t have masses of cover in the backs, though it would only need a couple of the young guns to be ready to remedy that; second, giving Byrne the 10 shirt for 24 is a massive vote of confidence in him. If he genuinely is better than Dupree, Cooper, Mago and Ellis, then we are in for a treat next year. Third, what extraordinary strength in depth in the forwards. Can’t wait to see the big lads rolling on and off. Been too long since we had a scary pack…

Eckersley and Douglas are definitely ready for a crack at first team level and deserve to opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised if once in they are hard to leave out. Eckersley has natural size and can still fill into his frame he's got good speed and power and physically looks the part. Douglas has that x factor about him with great natural athletic ability again he's got great turn of pace and is sharp over that first ten yard.
Both scored plenty great tries out on loan last season and Eckersley was outstanding in reserves GF while opposite to Hurrell at centre. Both can play fullback wing and centre I would look forward to seeing them and how they handle it. Hampshire also gives us cover at fullback, half and wing at a push.
Leeming played half as cover plenty times so while maybe not stacked we have some utility. French is a massive plus as I think he could not just cover most positions but actually be up there with the best at it in SL.

Farrimond is a special prospect. Good on the club to give him this accolade. Not sure why the news piece is saying its a snub for Thompson/Leeming, just journos muck raking I suppose.

The incoming players won't be bothered about their shirt numbers. Keighran getting the 3 shirt is obvious.
I'm sure it will have been known all along that O'Neil won the GF playing 9 so this year he gets the 9 shirt.
Likewise with Havard, Byrne, Isa & Ellis for the same reason.
Wigan is a new club for the likes of Leeming, Thompson, Walters etc and they know their chance will come.
Shirt number will be least of their concerns.

Looks like we have to wait a little longer for the free-running, ball playing, multi-skilled linkman at No 13. Still, if he can but in 40 to 50 tackles a game like young Morgan and carry on making the yards he was making towards the end of last season, I suppose he'll do.

O’Neill: Proud moment

Wigan Warriors hooker Brad O’Neill provides a pre-season update and shares his pride in finding out his shirt number for 2024.

O’Neill: “It’s a very proud moment personally for myself and my family as I’ve been at the Club since I was 13 and getting this jersey has always been one of my long-term goals.”

2024 season tickets are still on sale and can be purchased at early bird prices HERE.

Wigan Warriors hooker Brad O’Neill provides a pre-season update and shares his pride in finding out his shirt number for 2024.

O’Neill returned to Robin Park Arena at the end of November to start pre-season alongside fellow Super League Grand Final winners Liam Marshall and Patrick Mago.

Speaking on his opening weeks of pre-season, O’Neill said: “It’s gone well so far and it’s been enjoyable but tough as you’d expect when you come back for pre-season. We’re at the end of another week in which we’ve had some tough gym and field sessions, but the lads keep digging in and finding that way through it.”

The Warriors announced the 2024 squad numbers earlier this week, which saw O’Neill, who wore the No.22 shirt last season, given the No.9 shirt for the upcoming campaign.

On finding out his squad number for 2024, O’Neill said: “It was a very proud moment personally for myself and my family as I’ve been at the Club since I was 13 and getting this jersey has always been one of my long-term goals – it was a nice shock and surprise.”

O’Neill, who lifted the League Leaders’ Shield and Super League trophy in 2023, was named as Wigan Warriors’ Young Player of the Season as well as being nominated for the Super League Young Player of the Year award.

On his aims for the upcoming campaign, O’Neill said: “I’m still only young so it’s about building on last year whilst continuing to learn and work hard. Last year was great for me as a player – and for the team – and it’s important now that we get together as a group to continue this great pre-season.”

On Tuesday night O’Neill and the Warriors will train in front of supporters at Robin Park Arena, as the ‘Night Under The Lights’, in association with The Brick, returns ahead of the 2024 Super League season.

The night provides supporters with the opportunity to watch all of the available First Team train in an open session, before a meet and greet with the players will take place after training.

Speaking on the importance of the night, O’Neill said: “It’s a great night which is something different for us as a team as we get to enjoy the buzz of having the fans there and getting to meet them all afterwards. The fans mean so much to us so it’s important for us to give back to them.”

The event is free to attend with a ticket which can be obtained HERE, however, supporters are asked to bring a much-needed item on the night which will be donated to The Brick.

O’Neill added: “Wigan is one big community and if we as a Club can give as much as we can to help underprivileged people out in the area. Hopefully on Tuesday night we can collect a lot of donations for the Brick as they are such an important charity and their work means a lot to the whole community.”

🧱 As part of entry to our 'Night Under the lights' event, we are asking attendees to donate a much needed item to @TheBrickWigan.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I don't think squad numbers are a massive big deal, but if you'd asked me to choose them, I don't think I'd have quibbled too much with what they've chosen.
