Stevie Ward to Sue Leeds
Stevie Ward to Sue Leeds
Latest announcement with regards to head injuries, is that former Leeds player Stevie Ward is to sue the club over 2 concussions, that forced his early retierement aged 27.
The sum invloved is in the region of £200,000.00.
This highlights the ongoing difficulties of the game and it's possible demise as we know it.
Instead of changing the game, why don't the RFL and Clubs arrange contracts that state that the player fully acknowledges the dangers involved in playing the game and the possibility of head injuries.
All care can then be taken with players suffering from head knocks, to ensure that they do not return too early, but hopefully still keep the game as the high impact sport that it is.

Stevie Ward launches legal action against Leeds Rhinos over career-ending brain injury
The former Leeds Rhinos captain is heading to the high court relating to the injury that saw him retire aged 27.
Stevie Ward is suing Leeds Rhinos. Rugby League Live understands Ward, a former captain of the club, has initiated a High Court claim against the club for damages over head injuries that he suffered during his career.
The claim, which is thought to be in excess of £200,000, relates to the sequence of events that saw him retire from the game in 2020, when he was just 27 years old. The claim has been made against Leeds Cricket Football and Athletic Company. Court papers state the he suffered concussions in two separate matches within a fortnight, with the second of those matches proving to be the last time he ever took to the field.
It's claimed that Ward suffered a concussion in a pre-season friendly against Wigan Warriors on January 19th before suffering another concussion in the club's round one Super League match against Hull FC on February 2nd. The club has been accused of breach of duty and negligence in the management and handling of his return to play.
The Rhinos, who decided not to comment, are counterclaiming against doctor Marwan Al-Dawood and Synergy Ltd. Rugby League Live has also reached out to the solicitor representing Ward.
Ward, who had been at the club since he was a teenager, had worked his way through the club's youth system and made his debut in 2012, aged just 18. He would go on to make more than 130 appearances for the club and was rewarded with the number 13 jersey, a shirt made famous by Kevin Sinfield, after the former Rhinos captain retired in 2015.
Ward was named captain in 2019 but his career was cut short, retiring after suffering a concussion against the Black and Whites. Since then, Ward has been open about his struggles post-retirement and how he has continued to struggle with symptoms years since his career was brought to an end.

Re: Stevie Ward to Sue Leeds
Im unsure how i feel about these things
the human side of it says that obviously if they've breached rules etc by forcing him to play then there is something in that and its sad that he has symptoms today
however
you dont play rugby without accepting there is a large element of risk involved to your health. Your expectation cant be those of someone who is working in an office for example of the health you can expect post playing.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure

When I played(amateur) we used to have a bloke come round offering us insurance if we wanted it. Do pro players not need any form of insurance these days? I understand it's professional but surely clubs/players have to take out insurance, or maybe concussion isn't covered by it

Mm, it’s hard, but they know it’s a hard contact sport when they start playing RL. It’s harder than say RU as SBW commentedWigan_forever1985 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2024 2:14 pm Im unsure how i feel about these things
