Victoria Molyneux named Women’s Captain for 2024

Post by josie andrews »

New Head Coach Denis Betts has named Victoria Molyneux as Captain of the Warriors Women’s team for the 2024 season.

Molyneux joined the Warriors in 2019 and has gone on to make 47 appearances across four seasons, scoring 12 tries.

Molyneux inspired a generation when she returned to the International stage in 2021 following a 14-year break before being named in England’s Rugby League World Cup squad for 2022. Following her retirement from International Rugby League in October 2023, Molyneux has continued to commit to her Club career with the Warriors and recently received the RFL President’s Award from Sir Lindsay Hoyle.

Under the new leadership of Head Coach, Denis Betts, Molyneux – who has held the Vice Captaincy for the past three years – will now lead the team in 2024 as Captain, as Rachel Thompson takes the Vice Captain role.

On the appointment, Molyneux said: “I have been within the leadership group for a number of years but it is an absolute honour to be Club Captain for this season.

“It was a bit surreal when I first found out, to be honest,” She added.

Head Coach Denis Betts added: “Vicky Molyneux is very deserving of this honour, she has been a leader in all the environments she has been involved in. She has been an inspiration not just to the players at Wigan Warriors but throughout Women’s Rugby League.

“Having Rachel Thompson as Vice Captain adds to the depth of quality leadership at the Club.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
