WARRIORS SCHOLARS TRIUMPH AGAINST TRINITY

MATCH REPORT AS WIGAN WARRIORS SCHOLARS WIN AWAY AT WAKEFIELD TRINITY’S DIY KITCHENS STADIUM ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
It was an even start to the contest with neither side breaking the deadlock in the first quarter. The breakthrough came after 20 minutes when Wigan’s Seth Joyce went over to put Wigan 4-0 ahead. McGann sent a fantastic pass left to send Joyce flying through a defensive gap to ease over, although the conversion from Joshua Tyrer was off target.
Wigan crossed again five minutes later, this time through George Marsden. Joe McGann was once again involved, sending the stand-off through, who cut back inside to finish off the score to help Tyrer from the tee. The conversion was good this time for 10-0.
Gaining a penalty for a high tackle, Marsden kicked to touch to get Wigan 35m away on the half hour. Substitute Victor Omodele received the ball in the middle and went on a blistering run to crash over for Wigan’s third score of the night after he evaded the Wakefield defence. Tyrer was on target once again with the conversion as Wigan increased their lead to 16-0.
Wakefield got a late consolation to end the first half as an error from Wigan from the restart allowed Trinity a scrum deep into Wigan territory. Interchange Zack Clegg got the home side on the board, latching on to a pass to ease over underneath the sticks. The effort was converted by Cummins as the Warriors went into the break with the score at 16-6 in Wigan’s favour.
Wakefield produced a fight back in the second half after the early 10-point deficit. The hosts crossed twice in 10 minutes through Daniel Hetherington on the left wing and Jake Gaunt from dummy half to level the game at 16-16 on 54 minutes.
Wigan responded well as Marsden crossed for his second of the night after some fantastic play from the stand-off in the build-up before Trinity hit back once more on the hour through a well taken effort on the right edge from Elijah Hylton. Wakefield converted successfully to lead 22-20 for the first time in the game.
Spirited after falling behind, Wigan got back in front with two quick-fire tries. Marsden completed his hat-trick just after the hour as he pounced on a handling error from Wakefield, which Tyrer converted. Will Dootson got his name on the scoresheet in the 65th minute, this time assisted by hat-trick scorer Marsden to put Wigan 30-22 ahead going into the final 10 minutes.
A late flurry from Wakefield saw them score on the final hooter after a defensive break from Daniel Hetherington, with the effort converted, however, it wasn’t enough as Wigan held on to win 30-28 to take the two points home.
