Next week on 12th April, we will celebrate 100 years since Wigan won their first Challenge Cup! We have now won it once every 5 seasons since but we were late to the party!

Hopefully I will have a programme from the game soon and more relics that have recently been unearthed but…

Love these reads! Makes me wish I'd paid more attention when my Grandad used to tell me stories about watching the likes of Leytham, Jenkins, Todd and Miller before WW1...

Great stuff, Marc . . . Thank you.

It made me realise that it's only 5 years from us celebrating the first final at Wembley! I won't spoil it for anyone who wants to wait til 2029, but the first try scorer ever in a Wembley final was Syd Abram.

Syd was born on Liverpool Road in Hindley and played centre and stand-off. In later life he lived in or around Bridgewater Street in Hindley. His grave in Hindley cemetery is easy to find and the inscription says he was the first Wembley try scorer.

Syd:
“ "Our forwards mauled for the ball - the play-the-ball was different in those days - just around the centre line. A pass came to me and I simply started to run. I kept on going, all the time expecting to be challenged. I thought I may have to pass the ball but suddenly there was a gap. Lou Brown kept shouting "Keep going Syd" and then there was the line. One of their players just arrived to tackle me but it was too late, I was over.
"There was no kissing and cuddling like there is now. I just ran back towards our half and as I did one of our players shouted "Good lad Syd, the first man to score a try at Wembley and he comes from Wigan!"
