Tom Briscoe lined up for Hull FC return in Leigh Leopards player swap deal

Post by josie andrews »

Hull FC are set to bring the former Black and Whites winger back to the club.

Hull FC are negotiating a shock transfer for former crowd favourite Tom Briscoe. The now-34-year-old, who has spent the last eighteen months at Leigh Leopards, is closing in on a return to the club where he made his debut as a teenager back in 2008, with the Black and Whites working on a swap deal that will see a current player head the other way.

That player is understood to be Darnell McIntosh, with the 26-year-old winger, who signed a three-year deal ahead of 2022, out of contract at the end of the season. Hull Live understands all parties are now keen to get the deal done, with Briscoe and McIntosh moving in opposite directions on season-long loans. The moves will then become permanent in 2025.

Briscoe has been out with a calf injury but is in the final stages of his rehab and could make his second debut for the club against Leeds Rhinos this weekend. He played 147 times for Hull from 2008 to 2013, scoring 90 tries. He also played for England during his time at the club before moving to the Rhinos ahead of the 2014 season.

He won two Challenge Cup and Super League titles at Leeds, scoring a staggering five tries in the 2015 cup final against Hull KR. He also won the cup again with Leigh last season, once again scoring against Rovers in the final. To date, he has scored over 200 career tries and is closing in on 400 appearances.

As well as Briscoe, Hull are active on three fronts as they look to strengthen their squad. Richie Myler, who played with Briscoe at Leeds, is open to further loan deals, not to mention domestic or overseas acquisitions, with two quota spots to work with. It's believed more deals could get over the line this week, with enquiries made across the Super League competition.

Don’t know who is worst Leeds or HFC desperation from both clubs IMO

Hull FC set to sign Ed Chamberlain as part of swap deal with Leigh Leopards

Ed Chamberlain is set to follow Tom Briscoe to Hull FC as part of the deal that will see Darnell McIntosh move to Leigh Leopards.

As first reported by Hull Live, Briscoe is on his way back to the MKM Stadium on an initial season-long loan in a swap deal with McIntosh.

The Yorkshire Post understands that Chamberlain is also on the verge of joining Hull on a short-term contract at a time of major change for the club.

The outside back has scored 21 tries in 52 games for Leigh since his arrival ahead of the 2022 season.

Chamberlain counts Widnes Vikings and Salford Red Devils among his former clubs.

The 28-year-old, who has appeared in two World Cups for Ireland, will be joined at the MKM Stadium by Leopards team-mate Briscoe, a former Hull favourite.

Briscoe scored 90 tries in 147 appearances for the Black and Whites from 2008 to 2013 before a successful spell with Leeds Rhinos.

Both players could be signed in time for Sunday's home game against Briscoe's former club Leeds.

McIntosh heads the other way to bring an end to his two-and-a-half-year stay at Hull.

The former Huddersfield Giants winger joined the Black and Whites in 2022 and has gone on to score 23 tries in 53 matches.

McIntosh will become the latest player to leave Hull following the departures of Nu Brown and Tex Hoy as part of an early shake-up for the club in 2024.

Richie Myler last week became Hull’s director of rugby and has been tasked with finding Tony Smith’s successor after he paid the price for a disastrous start to the season.

Salford head coach Paul Rowley is reportedly the club’s number one target.

Three reasons why Paul Rowley will accept Hull FC job

It’s looking increasingly likely that Salford Red Devils head coach Paul Rowley will be the man to replace Tony Smith at Hull FC.

Under Smith, the Black and Whites had a troubled start to the season, winning just one of their seven games in Super League and conceding a club-record number of points in the process.

Huge defeats at the hands of Huddersfield Giants and Leigh Leopards, as well as embarrassing derby defeats to Hull KR, meant it seemed an inevitability that change would happen

They face Leeds Rhinos on Sunday,

Paul Rowley’s Salford side, meanwhile, have had a strange season – fantastic performances, and victories, against Hull KR and St Helens towards the start of the year gave fans real hope that a repeat of the 2022 season could be achieved.

However, poor performances against Castleford Tigers, who picked up their first (and so far, only) win of the season against them, and winless London Broncos have shown that this side may not be capable of mixing with the very best at the moment.

Despite this, Rowley has long been regarded as one of the most exciting coaches in the league, which begs the question: why would he take the Hull FC job?

A humiliating dismissal live on-air for club icon Lee Radford, and Tony Smith’s lack of support, have made the head coach role at the MKM Stadium seem to be a poisoned chalice in recent years.

However, below are some suggestions to the contrary.

Rowley is used to tough jobs

After doing a good job at Leigh Centurions, where he won back-to-back Championship titles, Rowley took the inaugural head coach role at Toronto Wolfpack.

This was far from taking the easy option – a North American rugby league team was a complete unknown, and added to this, flying across the Atlantic week in, week out must really take a toll.

On the field, it was a different story – the significant financial backing compared to their peers makes it hard to truly determine what his impact was – but everything else made it a move that showed that he’s willing to try different things.

The Salford job is also far from an easy one.

In 2022, his first season at the club, they started poorly, falling to 10th in Super League.

However, an unbelievable run of form towards the end of the campaign lifted them all the way to the playoffs, making it to the semi-finals after defeating Huddersfield Giants, who finished third, 28-0.

Despite the early-season adversity, Rowley helped his side through it all, and achieved great things. This has all been done under tough constraints, with the constant sale of the club’s best players making the Salford job one of the toughest in the league.

For this season, Rowley was forced to lose star men Andy Ackers and Brodie Croft due to the club’s financial situation, but he still has the Red Devils ahead of Leeds, the club they signed for, in the Super League table.

He isn’t afraid of tough jobs, and he does well when faced with them.

He’d likely be backed at Hull FC

The club, according to Hull Live, are paying £150,000 to bring Rowley to the club: they clearly have faith that he’s right for the job, and are willing to put significant investment into him.

If they’re willing to do that, it surely makes sense that they’d be willing to put money into new signings, such as a half-back to pair with Jake Trueman.

The new investment, reportedly from the Thirkill family, would make this even more possible.

Being backed recruitment-wise is any head coach’s dream.

He’s got a clean slate to work with

Nu Brown and Tex Hoy have already left the club this season, leaving FC with an estimated £1 million cap space to work with.

Danny Houghton is retiring at the end of the season, leaving a vacancy for a hooker, and 14 players will be out-of-contract at the end of the campaign, leaving much of the 2025 squad up to Rowley and new Director of Rugby Richie Myler.

Myler, despite not having non-playing experience, is a fresh pair of eyes that knows the game well, and with this being a first non-playing role for him, he’ll be eager to be a success.

More immediately though, Hull FC’s two available quota spots give Rowley the opportunity to make immediate signings for a new-look Hull FC side.

Does that mean that Tony Smith wasn’t backed fully by Hull FC & was just a ‘fill in’ until the club got fed up?

i'd read it more that he's at Salford where he's not had a massive budget and with the money apparently coming into Hull, he'd get backed there instead what he's currently had to deal with. But i suppose its one of them, we know Salford have had financial issues, but is Hull really the answer for him?
