Wigan Warriors prop banned for Challenge Cup semi-final with three suspended

One player is also being investigated over alleged verbal abuse, but has not been charged.

Liam Byrne will miss Wigan Warriors' Challenge Cup semi-final after receiving a two-match ban from the Match Review Panel. The Ireland international was sin-binned after the first tackle in their win over Huddersfield Giants and has now been charged for the incident.

Byrne has received a Grade C charge which has seen him banned for two matches. He has received the higher end of the sanctioning for the grade due to his previous disciplinary record. He was sent off in Wigan's defeat to St Helens on Good Friday. Wigan can appeal the charge but if they don't, it rules him out of Saturday's semi-final in Doncaster.

He is one of three players suspended this week, with Tommy Makinson and Liam Horne receiving one-match bans after their red cards in the game between St Helens and Castleford Tigers. Makinson has been charged for head contact and Horne a dangerous throw. Both are at Grade C but their previous records have seen them receive a game less than Byrne.

Elsewhere, Hull FC prop Herman Ese'ese is being investigated after being accused of verbal abuse in their defeat to London Broncos. He has not been charged, with procedures now in place to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to charge. The RFL have confirmed the incident will be considered again next Monday.

Why Tommy Makinson & Liam Horne will be free for St Helens & Castleford Tigers to play in the next round of Super League despite bans


ST HELENS and Castleford Tigers fans will have been waiting intently for the Disciplinary Match Review Panel to release its findings following the weekend round of Super League.

Both Tommy Makinson and Liam Horne were sent off for Saints and the Tigers respectively in Saints’ 60-4 thrashing of Castleford on Friday night.

However, both men have only incurred one-match penalty notices after being charged with Grade C Head Contact (Makinson) and Grade C Dangerous Throw (Horne).

With Castleford’s reserves going up against Saints’ reserves on Sunday afternoon at The Jungle, both Makinson and Horne will be able to use that fixture to count towards their one-match suspension.

That will then see both players available for selection for Super League Round 12 the following week as Saints go up against Leeds Rhinos on Friday 24 May and Castleford take on Hull FC at The Jungle on the same day.

This loophole has, of course, been used by many Super League teams in the past to ensure their best players are available for crunch top flight matches.

Tommy Makinson - previous good record - is this the same player i recall being banned at least once per season, including sticking his finger where the sun dont shine for 8 match ban (unless it got reduced on appeal)

this whole previous good record is a complete joke in how it gets applied or doesnt. Goldon boy (Welsby) was up before the beak quite regular last season and always got off for previous good record - well he will if you keep letting him off

Don’t think Liam had been sent off before this season at Saints! They keep mentioning consistency, well there just isn’t any at all IMO

and thats where most fans frustrations lie, and many will say that Wigan get away with everything every week

I can accept that at times the ref on field may miss something or interpret it slightly differently to what a fan may see as he usually gets once chance at speed to make a judgement, but we had Shorrocks sent off in the semi last year absolutely perfect tackle IMO / Isa for a perfect tackle (til he let for a millisecond on the way down) / Byrne already this year sent off v Saints for what we've seen lots of week in week out, and 2 of those cost us the game

however, for the panel to get things so wrong is simply unforgiveable as they get to watch umpteen replays and see every game, so there should be consistency from their perspective
