Hull KR saw their hopes of heading to Wembley for a second successive year slashed as they lost to Wigan Warriors in a semi-final for the second time in less than eight months.

The Robins didn’t just lose either, they were played off the park at times by a Wigan side that didn’t have to earn too much and that will be a huge point of frustration for Willie Peters who has now twice seen his team hammered by Matt Peet’s men in semi-final.

Today’s 38-6 loss comes just 224 days after the Super League playoff semi-final defeat that was 42-12, and on neither occasion have the Robins given a fair account of themselves. Testament to that is the fact that they managed to beat Wigan just last month and in impressive fashion but that 26-10 win pales in comparison to today’s defeat.

Wigan got ahead after four minutes when exposing the Hull KR right edge and from that point onwards the game became somewhat of a procession, 24-0 at halftime turned into 38-6 after 80 minutes with Mikey Lewis’ moment of magic to set up Joe Burgess saving KR from a whitewash.

However, there were question marks over the first two Wigan tries with calls for a forward pass and then an escort that gave Wigan territory on the second being asked. Willie Peters himself asked plenty during the game after it was revealed that he had stormed down to confront the fourth official.

Post-game, he was far more reserved but he has flagged up concerns still.

Hull KR coach seeks clarification on “certain decisions”

Speaking post-match to BBC Humberside, Peters explained that whilst Wigan were by far the better team and Hull KR could have no complaint about the result, there were questions to be asked about ‘certain decisions’.

“We’re up against world champions and they showed that they’re world champions for a reason. They showed that they’re the benchmark of the competition,” Peters explained as his initial assessment of the game, before then quizzing some of the decisions that didn’t go the way of the Robins.

There were a couple of things there that I wasn’t happy about,” the Australian explained when asked about his antics that saw him quiz the fourth official during the first half.

Continuing, he added: “I just want to get clarification around an escort and what that looks like. There were a couple of times offside and things in the ruck but we got beat today by Wigan, who are a far better team.

“Yes, there was some frustration around certain decisions that were made, there’s no doubt about that, but we got beaten by Wigan.”

Pushed further on what his gripes were, Peters was once again quick to clarify that despite the frustration, none of the issues caused the defeat. Instead, he spoke on his team’s need to be accountable but that doesn’t mean he wants the issues to go unaddressed.

He said: “I just wouldn’t like to see in major games some decisions impact those bigger games, but the referees certainly didn’t have any impact on the final score today.

“As I said though, in big games, and today it wasn’t any moment in particular, but moments in games and winning those key moments are important. We wanted to start fast and we didn’t. We had something go against us that I believe went against us and we didn’t defend it.

That’s where we need to be better and that’s where I’ll own up as a coach and the players will own. I’d just like to get some clarification around some certain things that were made, decisions that were made.”

Maybe concentrate on your own teams. Just because the media narrative was anti wigan you shouldn't use it.

Player who repeatedly attacked a player in the head only given the same punishment as the retaliation of shoving him into the ground.
Professional foul by tackling Field after the ref called 20 metre restart to prevent quick play ignored.
Sticking an arm out to stop French chasing his kick ignored.

It's easy to point out a forward pass (that would be called momentum if KR had done it (they did a few) and go on about escorting but the coach damn well knows Smith couldn't stop moving as that would be a penalty for KR

KR got away with just as many things in the game but no one will point that out outside of Wigan fans.

They will be complaining about Abbas Miski being allowed off his wing to score on the other side of the pitch next. Maybe that sort of commitment and effort is why we won. What’s the old saying, “The harder l work the luckier l get”. I don’t think anybody is scared of Wigan but they are realising how far behind us they could be when it all comes together like yesterday, and what it will take to get within a sniff of winning anything. Does that sound arrogant or like a Sentelinz supporter?

Smacks of being a sore loser. He was thoroughly outcoached yesterday. He may have reason to gripe but it should not be aired in public. On the whole I thought Kendal was good yesterday.

I don’t get that love in with KR they do have Lewis yes but after that there’s not one player of theirs I’d want at Wigan,yes they can turn a side like Wigan over any team can but to see pundit after pundit all say KR would do Wigan was bizarre,as for his comment I wonder if he’d bought into the hype this season because for me he had them peaking for the cup final and now they’ve nothing left to fight for

If Peters has a dispute with the match officials he should go through the normal channels not the media.

This stuff reminds me of John Monie's view that coaches should "only complain about the referee when you've won"

Absolutely. I think Lewis is a good player, and he had a decent game. He certainly tried his heart out, and if his team-mates had played to his level, the game would have been a lot closer. And yeah, watching it back on TV, where they highlighted Miski's run to get to the ball for the try, just shows everything good about the coaching. I'd have never noticed it at the game, following the ball, but it shows how well-deserved the score was.

Surely the beak will have something to say about the assault on Field? I imagine a few HKR players will be in trouble.

the problem we've got as a game now is that we are following (very slowly) football

too many players going to ground too easily / milking a penalty and also too many players with their arms in the air constantly to the ref whether it be for a marginal high shot or slow POTB

on Saturday their kick chase just kept diving to the ground hoping to get a penalty. Wigan were quite rightly defending their full back / wing taking the ball. Without looking at each one over and over, i would say legally as the ref saw nowt wrong, and hence play on.

I think it was for one of our tries, you can see Mikey Lewis trying to stop the chasing Wigan player, but they just knocked him out the way, thats the way to do it, show desire and commitment to chase the ball and win it, not go down the easy route of trying to milk it.

penalty / set restart wise probably not too much in it. You cant blame the ref for not being able to break down Wigans defence which was outstanding all game. In 80 minutes they crossed the line once, and that was straight in front of us. At first i thought try, but after watching it on TV, the tackle from Wardle was outstanding, and i think there was an element of doubt as to whether it actually was grounded. The other 2 in the corner were both great plays from Burgess / Hall, but equally 3 Wigan players in each tackle showing the desire and commitment to defend the line, and quite correctly called no try

Peters is well aware of the "escort" rule and his team used the same tactics during the semi - case in point, look at the dropped ball before Nsemba's try Both Hiku and Burgess were wandering around in front of Evalds.
