Former Parramatta Eels boss Brad Arthur wants Super League job

Reports have emerged that the recently sacked head coach Brad Arthur is interested in coaching in Super League, should a position become vacant.

Arthur was sacked just a day shy of his 50th birthday with Parramatta Eels higher-ups pulling the trigger on the man who had coached them for a decade.

Brad Arthur first took a caretaker role at the club back in 2012 before ascending to the role of head coach on a permanent basis in 2014, during which time he coached 258 games and took the Eels to the Grand Final once.

That Grand Final defeat came in 2022, the second of Penrith Panther’s current streak of NRL titles, but since then the Eels had placed 10th and were languishing near the bottom of the table when he was sacked in May after just three wins in ten this campaign.

Sam Burgess was initially on the shortlist to be the new head coach there, whilst recent reports have also put Matt Peet on that shortlist as well. However, it now appears that Brad Arthur himself could be headed to Super League following a report that he is interested in a head coaching gig.

Brad Arthur might have only been out of coaching for less than a month but it seems that he already has eyes on returning to work with Sky Sports‘ Jenna Brooks reporting that the 50-year-old is keen to coach in Super League.

Speaking in the pre-match coverage of Warrington Wolves versus Salford Red Devils, Brooks picked out Brad Arthur as “one to keep a close eye on” after revealing that he’s interested in a Super League switch.

Brooks said: “I can tell you one name that I am hearing from Down Under that is interested in possibly being considered for a Head Coaching role in Super League, should one become available, and that is the former Parramatta Eels head coach Brad Arthur.

That’s definitely one to keep a close eye on.”

Obviously, at the moment there is yet to be a vacant head coach role with just one sacking in Super League so far. That was at Hull FC with the Black and Whites dismissing Tony Smith, however, they have confirmed that John Cartwright will take over on a three-year-deal from next season.

Perhaps as well, the reports that Brad Arthur would be interested in a move to Super League could force owners to consider making a change if they’re safe in the knowledge that there is an extremely experienced candidate reportedly keen to take over.

As Brooks said, it’s one to keep an eye on.
