Briers appears likely to be returning to Super League next year.
Lee Briers has held talks with St Helens about a potential move to the club next year. Rugby League Live understands head coach Paul Wellens has held a number of discussions with Briers about a potential return to Super League next year to become a new addition to the club's coaching staff.
Briers, the former Wigan Warriors assistant coach, is currently on the coaching staff at NRL outfit Brisbane Broncos, but has been heavily linked with a move away from the club at the end of the season.
The 46-year-old has previously been linked with a move to South Sydney Rabbitohs to work under Wayne Bennett. However, it is believed that the former Warrington Wolves player wants to return to the UK next year and that has seen him hold talks with Wellens in recent weeks.
Saints are believed to be looking at adding to their coaching staff next year. But one crucial detail that needs to be resolved is the future of Wellens, with the club yet to activate the option in his contract. The club has the ability to extend his contract by another 12 months but has yet to do so. As such, it appears that any deal to bring Briers to the club would hinge on Wellens remaining next year
Briers was previously linked with Hull FC, provisionally as head coach and then as assistant to John Cartwright, who he is currently working with at the Broncos, however, it appears that should he return, it's a move to Saints that is most likely.
It's also been suggested that Briers would be considered as an addition to Saints coaching staff, rather than a replacement for anyone currently at the club.
