Sam Burgess took Warrington Wolves to the top of Super League last week with a huge 40-4 win over Wigan Warriors and he has now reportedly agreed to a contract extension with the club.

That is per Ross Heppenstall writing for Love Rugby League with the news coming just over a week after Sam Burgess let slip that a new contract offer was on the table.

The Warrington Wolves boss had been speaking with The Daily Telegraph and in that interview when quizzed about any prospects of an NRL return, he revealed that talks had been had about extending his two-year deal.

Sam Burgess explained: “It’s important I spend time here. I’m only nine months into my coaching career. There is some talk of adding another year at the moment.”

Per Heppenstall, those talks have now progressed to the point where a new deal has been agreed with Burgess reported to be in line to spend a third year at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, extending his stay until the end of the 2026 season.

Sam Burgess rewarded for transforming Warrington Wolves

The reports about Sam Burgess extending his deal come a year after Warrington sacked Daryl Powell following an embarrassing loss to Wakefield Trinity and after seven consecutive losses.

Fast forward to now and Warrington are on a run of five consecutive wins that has seen them beat St Helens and Wigan and ascend to the top of the Super League table.

Friday night will see Burgess’ latest test as Warrington hosts second-place Hull KR in a game that will see the victor claim Super League’s top spot.

It’s a remarkable transformation and highlights just what a huge influence Sam Burgess has had on the club in terms of coaching but also their ability to recruit with Burgess being a player that many current players grew up idolising.

Just recently, Warrington have brought in Luke Yates and John Bateman with Yates crediting Burgess’ influence as a key factor and Bateman leaving the NRL for his former international teammate.

Plenty have questioned the future of Sam Burgess but with these latest reports, it appears that he will remain in Super League until at least the end of 2026 which can only be a good thing for the English game.

Yes Warrington rightly took Wigan apart but I don’t know they still look a little brittle to me,come up against full strength sides and let’s see but sport is never that simple is it?

As much as it pains me to say, w***y w***y Warrington are looking like a decent team under Burgess, he seems to have got a much better mental attitude out of them, they don't look as fragile as previous years.
With their expandable salary cap, they could be a real force in the next few years 🤬
