Re: Wigan squad for Leigh (R2)
Good to see Liam Byrne in, hopefully allowing the likes of Luke Thompson and others to do less minutes.
I'm still a bit surprised that we haven't played Adam Keighran at 6 and Zach Eckersley in the centres. Maybe now Jai is back is the time to try it?

Re: Wigan squad for Leigh (R2)
I think Hampshire will be at 6 again. Had a good second half and his kick for Eckersley's try was excellent.
Hopefully Ryan will do some field kicking to take the pressure off Harry. Give the opposition something they don 't anticipate.

Re: Wigan squad for Leigh (R2)
Hopefully Hampshire will improve, his defence is weak and he isn't confident enough to pass the ball to his outside backs on the right wing, he cuts back inside and takes the soft option of passing to the middle of the field.
With him in the he team it will be very conservative play.

Re: Wigan squad for Leigh (R2)
It's unlikely that Hampshire is going to improve at this late stage of his career. What we have is the least worst option at the moment, given the need to take the heat away from Farrimond, who will come again for us.

Re: Wigan squad for Leigh (R2)
It's an interesting choice for Matt Peet this week. Do we go all in now playing our best team during this busy period in the hope that we could maybe rest later on? Or try to avoid burnout by rotating some of the players and maybe having a game or two where we don't necessarily play our best team.
The right edge is obviously still an issue going up against Leigh's very dangerous left edge. Hampshire was slightly better defensively than Farrimond has been but I think it's also fair to say he wasn't tested as much. Leigh will definitely test us
Switching players around could cause more issues though. While Keighran could be an option in the halves and may defend better than Hampshire or Farrimond that means Eckersley goes into centre and his reading of the game defensively was a bit weak too, so really you're just changing the weak link from stand off to centre. I guess it's a case of whether collectively it would be a strong combination.
We do need to be careful with our experienced and hard working players like Thompson, Ellis, Havard and Farrell. Their fitness levels are great but a short turnaround of fixtures and long minutes is bound to put a strain on anyone. We do have players like Mago, Dupree, Byrne and Hill who should really be stepping up in a situation like this.
I think Marshall might be due a rest at some point given the work that he puts in. Wingers might not do as much work defensively but their work returning the ball is non-stop for 80 minutes. Maybe one of the next few games might see Douglas get a chance on the left, or Eckersley if he's not involved somewhere else. Hampshire has played there too but I think he's more fond of the right wing.

Id rotate the forwards as much as possible and leave it at that. Same backline as hudds for me.

Re: Wigan squad for Leigh (R2)
Surely, EEP, your observation about Eckersley's defence is based on his games out of position at full back? I've not seen him for academy or reserves, but would expect he'd be more comfortable defending at centre?EagleEyePie wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2024 5:05 pm It's an interesting choice for Matt Peet this week.
