I was more worried about the dangerous tackle in front of the posts than the yellow card. Good he hasn't been banned

Leyth are the dark horses for the play-offs - hitting form at the right time.

With Cas away, Hull KR and Saints at home, they'll have a big say in the outcome.

Warrington Wolves make appeal decision after Paul Vaughan ban

Warrington Wolves will appeal the three-match ban handed to their star forward Paul Vaughan following his controversial red card against Leigh Leopards.

That has been confirmed by the RFL with Warrington set to appear at an Operational Rules Tribunal later this evening to context the grading of Vaughan’s three-match ban.

The Australian was handed a Grade D charge for ‘Head Contact’ with the three-match sanction coming at the higher end of the grade for recommended sanctioning. He also copped a £250 fine.

That followed his red card early on against Leigh Leopards on Friday night for hs tackle on Frankie Halton. The Leopards had just scored and Vaughan was the second man in the tackle as Halton carried the ball out from the kick-off.

After the second-rower stayed down, the video referee took a look at the incident which resulted in Vaughan being shown a red card and sent off, much to the dismay of fans and the anger of Sam Burgess who would tee off on the decision post-match.

Burgess’ fury suggested that Warrington may well appeal and that has now been confirmed.

What Sam Burgess said after Warrington Wolves star’s red card

The three-match ban handed to Paul Vaughan meant that he would miss the remainder of the regular season, however, if the club are successful at an appeal then it could be reduced or even overturned.

Vaughan was one of six players banned, including a Castleford Tigers academy player, with a total of ten players charged across Super League. At present, only Warrington Wolves have confirmed intent to appeal.

That was somewhat expected given Sam Burgess’ upset over the red card with the Wire boss speaking post-match about the decision.

“It was embarrassing”, Burgess argued.

“It has become a theatrical game. Numerous players were telling players to stay down when we were about to play on. Is it really a red card? Were there mitigating factors? I believe so. I would have said yellow. It was such a big call because it had such an influence on the result.”

He also had made the point that his side ‘won’ the game after the sending-off, outscoring Leigh 12-10 despite the man disadvantage, although they would fall to a 16-12 loss which has made their chances of winning the League Leaders Shield very slim.

Warrington Wolves’ Paul Vaughan discovers ban appeal verdict

WARRINGTON WOLVES forward Paul Vaughan will miss the rest of the Super League regular season after his three-match ban was upheld.

Vaughan was given the suspension by the match review panel for a high tackle on Leigh Leopards’ Owen Trout last Friday, for which he was also shown a red card.

While the player pleaded guilty to the charge of head contact, he challenged the Grade D charge in the hope of seeing the length of ban reduced.

It means Vaughan will miss Warrington’s final three regular games, against St Helens, Huddersfield Giants and London Broncos.

He will not be available to play again until Warrington’s first play-off match, with their top-six place already secured.

So let me get this right. Burgess was up
In arms stating that Vaughan’s actions did not warrant a ban. Vaughan gets a three match ban. Vaughan appeals but pleads guilty citing a lesser offence. Ban upheld. In that case why was Burgess so incensed?

Referees 'need to calm down with cards' - Burgess

Post by josie andrews »

Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess said match officials "need to calm down" with yellow and red cards after Paul Vaughan's dismissal ruled him out for the rest of the regular campaign.

Vaughan received a three-game ban for head contact on Owen Trout in the first half of their 16-12 Super League defeat by Leigh Leopards.

The club appealed the decision but the Match Review Panel's Grade D head contact charge was upheld.

"We felt there were mitigating factors and that's why we challenged it but the framework we live in, it's pretty tough," Burgess told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"I still don't think it's a red card, which is not a popular comment to some people, but we all have responsibility, players, coaches and adjudicators and administrators to try and make the product as best as possible and I don't know if 13 versus 12 is the best product.

“That doesn’t mean you should have free reign to go around taking people’s heads off. That’s been illegal since the game started.

“I just think we can get trigger happy and we need to calm down a bit with the cards.”

Burgess called the decision "embarrassing" after the match, labelling it a "theatrical game."

In the aftermath of the loss, Burgess said he had met with RFL company secretary and former referee Robert Hicks to discuss the red card.

Despite the outcome, Burgess believes appealing the decision was the right thing to do.

"It's an exciting time of the year and he's done a lot to help the team get here," Burgess added.

"I really didn't think there was much intent in that tackle and listening to him talk about it, he didn't.

"We were probably heading up a dead end in some aspects of that but I felt for Vaughany's peace of mind and for us as a club we were doing the right thing by him."
