JOHN BATEMAN intends to return to Wests Tigers at the end of his loan spell with Warrington Wolves, according to reports.

The Sydney Morning Herald have reported that Bateman’s agent has told the NRL club of his intention to come back to the club.

Bateman is still contracted to Wests for another two seasons, having signed a four-year deal after leaving Wigan Warriors at the end of 2022.

But the Tigers, who have finished bottom of the NRL in each of the past three seasons, allowed the England international to depart mid-season and return to Super League.

When he joined Warrington in August, Bateman said he was unsure what his future would hold beyond this season.

“They probably didn’t have much to play for over there so that’s probably why they were more than keen to (let me go),” he said.

“I’ll have to see what gets said and what goes from there. I don’t know from their end (what they want), but on my end, I’ve got a house over there and stuff like that so, for me, I’ll be going back at the end of the year.”

It appears that is now his firm intention once his time with Warrington comes to an end.

I have watched his games for Warrington & to be honest he is nothing like the player on his first contract with us. It also looks like Warrington are not extending his contract with them as he states he is going back to the NRL, any views from Wigan supporters?

Ive watched most of his games over here and in aus.His best stints were definately his first with us and his first season with canberra. He hasnt done much with wests and he was steady, at best in his second stint with us.Cant say ive seen anything extraordinary with his appearances for wire.Didnt see much ov him at bradford but saw enough to be happy with his signature for us at the time

Which reads to me like Wests don't rate him but can't get anybody else to sign him. Meanwhile he gets paid for 2 more years so says he's going back.

I have no knowledge of the situation and am purely saying how the above comes across to me.

Can anyone enlighten me?

I agree but I don't blame him. Probably looking for a pay off.

I think that's the case, and Benji Marshall doesn't rate him, or, at least, doesn't like the amount of the salary cap he's taking up.

If he was offered silly money by wests then yes let them pay up but he’s not the player he was

My favourite memory of Bateman was as a young lad (20?) when he went toe-to-toe with Peacock when we played Leeds at Headingley. Behind the try line at the away end, near the corner towards the cricket ground.
