MATT PEET HAS SHARED HIS EXCITEMENT AHEAD OF THURSDAY NIGHT’S RETRO ROUND CLASH AGAINST SALFORD RED DEVILS.

Wigan host the Red Devils in the final round of the regular Betfred Super League season knowing a win will see the Warriors lift the League Leaders’ Shield for the second consecutive season.

On the prospect of lifting the shield, Peet said: “It’s a chance we’ve earned. It’s been a long season which has tested the full squad, staff and Club. That’s what the League Leaders’ Shield stands for – consistency.

“Hopefully we can get the job done and lift that trophy in front of our fans who have been brilliant. It would be great to do so in a stadium that has been full of energy and atmosphere in recent weeks. When the stadium is packed and the fans are onboard, it’s such a great place to play.”

Peet has named an unchanged squad to face the Red Devils, and on his selection, he said: “We’re in a healthy spot but one twist of fate and things can change. The group’s training hard, there’s competition for places, and everyone is wanting to build momentum towards the end of the year – we’re looking forward to Thursday night.”

On preparation for the clash, Peet said: “We’ve had to adapt, but it’s probably made us more focused about our work. We were in a Monday for a light field session and we’ve had a good training day today. The fact we have some momentum at the minute means we just want to build on that.”

Speaking on Salford, Peet said: “Every time we face Salford it’s a fight and a challenge and they’ll be coming here looking to test us. We have to expect the unexpected.”

Praising the Retro Round fixture, Peet said: “It’s a fantastic celebration of our heritage and history from the traditional to the weird and whacky. I’m sure we will see some of those shirts in the stands on Thursday night. It excites the players who have the chance to write their own page and make this shirt famous.”

Ellis: Strength and motivation

* Kaide Ellis has spoken on the Warriors’ motivation ahead of Thursday night’s clash against Salford Red Devils.

* Ellis: “We’ve not always been perfect but we’ve kept our heads and managed to find wins in tough ways – I feel like we’re peaking at the right time.”

KAIDE ELLIS HAS SPOKEN ON THE MOTIVATION WIGAN WARRIORS HOLD AHEAD OF THURSDAY NIGHT’S CLASH AGAINST SALFORD RED DEVILS.

The Warriors beat Leeds Rhinos at The Brick Community Stadium last time out to ensure a victory over Salford would see Wigan lift the League Leaders’ Shield.

Ellis crossed for his first try since 2022 in the win, and on the moment, he said: “It’s been a long time coming as I didn’t get one last season. I was getting a bit nervous as we’re in the back end of the year but it was nice to get over for one – I’m happy.”

Speaking on the Warriors training schedule ahead of the clash, Ellis said: “The short turnaround’s meant we’ve not been able to do as many sessions but we’ve still been able to sharpen up. The mood’s remained positive as everyone gets a bit excited at this time in the year. There’s no better place to be than where we are at the minute.”

On the Red Devils, Ellis said: “Even though they’ve made the changes we still expect them to be Salford and to throw the ball around in attack whilst trying to put you under pressure in defence. Regardless of who plays our mindset will be preparing the same as if they were full strength. It won’t be too much about them, instead more about us.”

Reflecting on the Warriors’ position in the table, Ellis added: “We’ve not always been perfect but we’ve kept our heads and managed to find wins in tough ways. That has given us strength and I feel like we’re peaking at the right time.”

On the prospect of winning successive League Leaders’ Shields, Ellis said: “Just to win the trophy would be nice, but to do so back-to-back and to retain one of our trophies is pretty cool. That’s definitely a motivation for us heading into Thursday night.”
