Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont names the best player in Super League “by a mile”

Beaumont is well-known for his honest views and opinions on social media giant, X, and he took to the platform to compare Wigan Warriors star Bevan French to Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

In a post that showed French dazzling the Leopards with a grubber kick before collecting and rounding the fullback in Wigan’s 38-0 demolition of Leigh on Saturday evening, Beaumont hailed the livewire Australian and took umbrage at the fact that French had not been nominated for the Steve Prescott Man of Steel nor selected for the Super League Dream Team.

Beaumont posted: “He (French) is the best player in the comp by a mile but not in dream team or nominated for man of steel! We keep working towards fixing our game! We should have this man on bill boards everywhere advertising our sport. The haaland of RL and that’s from a United and leopards fan!”

Wigan fans will be hoping of more French magic when they take on Hull KR in the Super League Grand Final on Saturday evening.

I knew there was some common sense inside there somewhere. Well said Mr Beaumont.

A LOT of people would support that view.

Issue is that Man of Steel is a wishy washy title that doesn't really have any qualifying criteria.

I would add coach of the year too.

If Wigan win on Saturday, then Peet has won EVERYTHING POSSIBLE in the last year.

What more could he possibly do?

Its the RFL who need to be defining ways we can grow the sport; creating and showcasing stars like French is clearly one of the avenues.

Sadly we are completely dependent on Sky for anything of the sort, and the reality is Rugby League is a small sport for them and they probably assume it isn't worth their time and effort. That being said, they did it with Tomkins a while back...

Nsemba should be right up there for promotion / commercial work as well. An advertisers dream.

I don't usually rate Mr Beaumot but never been a truer word spoken French junior and Mikey Lewis should be promoting Rugby League back in the eighties and early ninties Offiah and Connelly where even in Emmerdale soap on TV and I think a few adverts outside of rugby at least I think it was Emerdale plus St Helens Scott Quinell is still making a living as an actor .It all supports Rugby league etc .Also it keeps it in the news.There was also programes on TV concerning Wigan and orrell plus The Bath matches etc Sorry for the Rant but Matty should have won Coach of the year by a mile.

If you were to ask people outside of the game to name a Rugby League player, they probably haven't got a clue, or would name Martin Offiah.

Surely IMG's remit, should be to promote the game and it's star players, to the general public, but as the usual RFL way, they appear to have no ideas how to epand the games popularity.

I thought when Bevan signed his long-term contract the stated intention was indeed to promote him as the face of rugby league. I know Bevan is a modest guy who doesn't seek the limelight but he does represent a once in a generation opportunity to showcase the very best of our game.

Couldn't agree more. What an advert for Rugby League.
