Favourite Wigan Road (or not) trips

Been thinking about this one as there's been a chat on RLFans about coldest ground (side tracked from original) and Josie's comment on Warriors TV thread. Its off season, so not loads to generally discuss
for me there are some that really stick in my memory
1. Featherstone away - i was driving a Fiat 126 BIS. 3 of us in the car, with crate of skol and inflatable red stripe bottle. Broke down somewhere near Rochdale. One of mates had a beer token from his local, and that got us all the way there and back, with several breakdown stops
2. Hull KR away - we'd been to Hull a couple of weeks previous, and we'd only put £10 in my dads car, so without me knowing, he thought he'd teach us a lesson

. On way back, best mate had his head out of the window on motor way singing away, and lost his Miami Dolphins hat (parents had literally just got back from the states with it) and then we were on the long down hill stretch coming off the pennines and ran out of petrol at the 10mile to the services marker

. So sat waiting on breakdown truck i'd 2 mates doing press ups on the hard shoulder and general exercises as they'd been ont ale, and were trying keep themselves occupied
3. Bradford away - didnt see 1 minute of rugby because of the fog. every now and then we saw the backside of the ingoal touch judge

. Absolute farce of an evening, but Noble admitted there was no way that Bradford were going to let the game be cancelled as they were in form, and we had injuries, so benefitted them massively

Is the Bradford game the one where we listened to a 34 - 12 defeat? Didn’t see a thing

Friend had a small radio which we listened to sat on the steps as it was just a waste of time standing. I remember the commentator on the radio shouting at one point "Who is that? Is that a Wigan player running down the wing?"

what a bloody night don’t even remember driving home or how we got there!
HKR away first game of the season 2022. The bloody main dual carriageway Heden Road closed at 10pm & we spent the next few hours being sent all over the place. Got home at 1.30am I was the last drop off, my friend still had to make her way home.
The team bus also got stuck as well arriving back at Robin Park at a similar time! It was a good job we won!
Remember playing Featherstone in a CC round. I was directed to the parking area for Wigan fans behind the stadium. Good job I had a 4 wheel drive cos it was full of mud & loads of cars got stuck.
Another time at Featherstone on a Wednesday night it was raining as per usual there & we were stood behind the sticks, this was when you were just a few feet away from the dead ball line. We were well beating them & I’m sure it was Stevie Hampton

scored right in front of us, the momentum, along with the sodden wet pitch, had him crashing into the billboards & a Featherstone fan next to us, a woman, lent over the the boards & tried to hit him with her brolly

she couldn’t reach him but it was hilarious

couldnt see a thing on the M62 and was driving over thinking this games aint on. Ironically, they gave us a ticket as we went into the ground to claim our match ticket back if / when it got called off

We thought the same & set off at 3pm parked up & went in the pub at the top for a little while before KO my mate saying I think it’s gonna be called off!
We must be mad! Or just mad Wigan Warriors fans. Although when I first started watching we were just called Wigan RL

I remember going to,
1, Halidax on a Friday night around about late 90's and the rain was biblical, there was about 100 or so fans stood at the very back of the stand and if I remember rightly for 80 mins we sand TESCO to the tune of disco as we'd just recently agreed to sell Central park.
2, That Bratfud match was a disgrace, it's the only time I ever kept my match ticket thinking "They'll give us summat surely".
3, The 92 cup semi final v Bratfud again at Burnden park, no semi final should finish with a score like that.
4, We played Castleford away in late 01 and I'd broken my hand so couldn't drive so said to my Dad "If you drive I'll pay for us both", I remember the game for my Dads reaction to Wheldon Rd.
5, Being at Knowsley Rd around 90 and the ref's were warming up in front of us and Cunmings came and had a chat as he was my games teacher.
6, 1990 second ashes test at Old Trafford, I was about 12 and remember it being the first time of only twice I can remember where the result was sad but the game was magnificent, what an atmosphere.

The Hull KR game of 2022 got home at just after 3 am,wife in work so she was impressed at all.
Special mention to the opening game at cas last season I don’t think I’ve ever seen rain like that my favourite pair of leather gloves filled with water and soaked down to my unmentionables horrid night, horrid ground

I had a £160 full length waterproof jacket & I can confirm it was totally waterproof.
I had the same problem with gloves, but I had my gloved hands in my pockets. The rain ran down the sleeves filled the gloves & the pockets! Saturated is an understatement that night!
This OP keeps bringing back memories of different games, & that’s saying something! I can’t remember last week at times never mind games from years ago.
I remember being at Bradford & for some reason we were stood in the side stand.
There was a gang of us used to go to games together young men & women, in one the guys transit van, all we needed was a cushion to sit on in the back.
Any road up, think it was the first time I saw a player sent off at half time going down the tunnel just below us.
The player was Ellery Hanley & the ref was John Holdsworth

Started the night at Cas under the big screen and ended under the shed on the other side. Packed like sardines
Fogsall was funny… crowd talking and all of a sudden Wigan walking back as a team and we cheered as we obviously scored!

Wasn't that Robin Whitfield? And Ellery reputedly told him he'd be refereeing in the second division the following week - and he was..?
