Salford Red Devils fire sale imminent with salary cap and quota dispensations considered
Super Leauge clubs have been instructed to make offers for Salford Red Devils player
A fire sale of Salford Red Devils' players appears imminent after clubs were told to declare their interest in the players they would like to sign. In the last 24 hours, clubs have been contacted by senior figures at the Rugby Football League and RL Commercial outlining Salford's latest perilous position, with the club facing yet another cash flow issue.
Sources across Super League have confirmed that they have received calls from either RFL chief executive Tony Sutton or RL Commercial chief Rhodri Jones to inform them that Salford will be selling players as part of a process that has seen them told to cut their costs by around £700,000.
But such is the severity of Salford's latest financial issue, clubs have now been informed that the RFL will consider granting salary cap and quota dispensations should it enable more offers, which would help Salford get through the rest of the month. Clubs have been told that simply cutting costs is now not enough to get Salford through their current predicament but with some clubs up to salary cap, dispensations will be considered as it could facilitate more offers that would provide the cash injection required.
As a result, clubs have been instructed to make offers for players and it is believed that all bids placed will also be directed to the RFL, who will then go through a process of going through the offers and determining which players will be sold to ensure the Reds have the cash they need while also reducing their costs.
Some clubs are also thought to be considering player swap proposals given it is likely Salford will need to find players so they have a squad for the upcoming season.
The focus of some clubs is already known. Hull FC have shown interest in Deon Cross and Marc Sneyd, while the latter has suitors across the competition.
But what is inevitable now is that there will be considerable player movement out of Salford, a bitterly disappointing reality for a club that has been desperate to avoid selling players. In the last two years they have sold Tyler Dupree, Brodie Croft and Andy Ackers. Now, further sales are set to take place.
Since being placed under enhanced special measures in November after receiving a central funding advancement of £500,000, Salford have been exploring investment opportunities. But none of those have materialised and with further revenue streams yet to come to fruition, action is now required to secure their short-term future.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.

that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

They do it the hard way don’t they Salford constantly great to watch but I suspect the Yorkshire mafia would sooner they go belly up so some club with a ground out of date in the 1920s can come in I. Their place.

What are they? Class B. That's a more serious grading error than cas. They seem to be insolvent.

So do I, the St Helens mafia are getting giddy about making a raid. Apparently they have spoken with Watkins.

Funny isnt it
Salford had a mega wealthy owner willling to invest his fortune into the club but was driven away as he couldnt do that due to the salary cap put in place to "protect" clubs from going under and level the playing field

unfortunately i dont think the good Dr was cash rich as may have been made out. I know of things that went on during his time, where money as involved. Obviously the most obvious was the player(s) taking him to court, but i know academy players werent paid and one of their games was due to be cancelled (was on sky) as he hadnt paid the doctor to be present for several games, so was held at ransom until he paid his debts or the game couldnt go ahead without medical supervision. The game went ahead delayed on sky v Saints. what i will say about Dr K is that he got people talking about the game (or himself) and he seemed to be influential in the marquee player change to the SC.Wigan_forever1985 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 8:23 am Funny isnt it

onto the current situation i dont know how its gotten to this with Salford. I dont know exactly what they asked for but the clubs voted at the end of last season to give them an advance on the TV money so they could pay the players etc over the off season. I also agree, that setting a precedent of allowing a fire sale, and other clubs to go over the cap to sign Salford's players isnt the way forward.
Surely the RFL / SL should be working with Salford to understand how bad the situation is and trying to ensure that they can fulfil their fixtures for this coming season, not sell off their assets as that isnt the solution, unless it really is that bad and they are going into liquidation

Re: Salford Red Devils fire sale imminent with salary cap and quota dispensations considered
Salford Red Devils' last hope with now or never investment stance before fire sale
With Salford on the brink of needing to sell players to secure their short-term future, the club are continuing to work on discussions with potential investment groups.
Today is a big one for Salford Red Devils as their quest for investment continues. The Super League club are on the verge of having to sell their players to rival clubs as financial issues begin to emerge once again.
Since receiving a £500,000 central funding advancement in November, the Reds have been in discussions with interested parties regarding a takeover, though nothing has materialised as of yet. Salford are being given as much time as possible to secure that investment and even as of Friday morning, there remains hope internally that talks can be advanced and a deal can be reached which would alleviate them from their current dire financial predicament.
However, there is also a realisation and acceptance from within the club that if those discussions are not fruitful within the next few days, they will have to sell their players to secure their short-term future.
The immediacy of the situation prompted the RFL's chief executive Tony Sutton and RL Commercial chief Rhodri Jones to contact fellow clubs on Wednesday to update them on the situation and to encourage them to start expressing interest in Salford's players.
That process has now started and Rugby League Live can reveal that over half of the clubs currently in Super League have now formally contacted Salford and the RFL and placed offers for the players they are interested in signing should Salford need to cash in.
As a result, it is very much a case of now or never on the investment front for Salford when it comes to the impact it will have on their short-term future.
Should player sales take place, salary cap and quota dispensations will be considered as an option to enhance the options available when it comes to bringing in cash and reducing costs though they would require approval from Super League clubs themselves. A financial restructuring expert appointed by the RFL has stated that £700,000 needs to be cut from the club's operational costs to make it sustainable.
Most Super League clubs are up to salary cap and have also utilised all their quota spots, which would prove restrictive to Salford and their need to sell. However, any dispensations would have to be discussed and approved before being signed off.
This has been viewed as an unideal position and officials across Super League have suggested that clubs who do have salary cap space would be the preferred buyers of players. Likewise, clubs with quota spots would be preferred buyers over a club that has used its seven allocated spots. The feeling among sources is that if dispensations are granted, it should only be for one season.
At that point Salford, who are under enhanced special measures by the RFL, would then be required to cut their cloth accordingly with the options that have been made available to them.
However, there still remains a glimmer of hope that Salford could still secure the investment that will prevent that process from being required. But it is accepted that it is now or never.
