Salford Red Devils man Joe Shorrocks has been handed a two-game ban by the disciplinary panel for his actions in Saturday’s Super League loss to Leeds Rhinos. Shorrocks caught Leeds‘ Brodie Croft with a high shot in the clash at the Salford Community Stadium, leaving the half-back needing treatment on the field.

After a lengthy stoppage, Croft was eventually stretchered off before failing a head injury assessment ensuring he will miss this weekend’s fixture with Castleford Tigers. Shorrocks will also sit out of Salford’s round three clash against Hull KR after being suspended for two games, with the forward ruled out of the club’s trip to Castleford Tigers on March 7, too.

That’s due to the 15 points he has been given the by the match review panel, 12 of which were due to the Grade D offence, with a further three points coming due to Croft’s inability to continue.

Elsewhere Hull KR man Micky McIlorum has been hit with two charges, one for dangerous contact and one for head contact, amassing four disciplinary points. With the threshold for a ban at six points, McIlorum will be able to feature for the Robins against Salford.

Salford’s Matty Foster and Wakefield Trinity’s Max Jowitt have also been handed three penalty points, while Morgan Knowles, Kaide Ellis, Dan Russell and Catalans Dragons pair Alrix Da Costa and Oliver Partington have all been given a point each as a result of Grade A charges.

Think Shorrocks is very unlucky with that.

From what I could see, Micky Mac was sinbinned for being Micky Mac not for any actions on the field of play. And the totting-up of points is for perceived actions in the past. Pretty poor stuff.

It’s not that straightforward.
Apparently, when you pay a fine you get some points removed. There’s an article knocking about somewhere that try’s to explain it all, but it seems to throw up more questions than answers. It seems you can be charged 5 or 6 times without being banned. If I can find it I’ll post it on here.

The confusing catch to new RFL disciplinary system revealed after mass charges following Round 1

We’re not sure about you, but we’re struggling to wrap our heads around the new disciplinary system – and the catch to it that has now been revealed makes it even more confusing.

As confirmed on Monday afternoon, an eye-watering 14 Super League players have been charged – and handed penalty points – following Round 1.

So, we’ll use Keighran as the example again here – strap yourself in for the confusing catch.

He’s on five points now, all received for the offence on Lam during Thursday night’s game. Five points aren’t enough to earn you any ban, you need six.

BUT, as we’ve now discovered, only half of any 3+ point sanction stays on record once you’ve paid that fine or served a sub sequential suspension.

For now, Keighran sits on five, but the next time he offends, he’ll be back down to 2.5 plus whatever penalty that second offence brings.

If Keighran’s next offence is a Grade A, he’ll only receive one penalty point. That one should take him up to six for the year, but it wouldn’t, it’d instead take him to 3.5.

Using the above as an example – first offence: 5 points – halved upon paying fine down to 2.5 – second offence: 1 point = 3.5 points.

Alternatively, another Grade C offence (five points) would take Keighran up to 7.5.

Essentially, all you need to know is that 3+ points = fine and potential suspension = offence penalty halved.

It sounds simple enough, but when we start getting into decimal points and halving offences, the question of changing the process really does have to be questioned.
