Hull FC have signed former loan player Sam Eseh with immediate effect. The Black and Whites have acquired the 21-year-old on a season-long loan from Wigan Warriors, with the prop bolstering John Cartwright's options for the rest of the year.

Eseh made four appearances for the club in his previous loan spell last summer and now provides some depth and competition to the side, with Hull losing Ligi Sao to a devastating season-ending injury last week. The prop will be out for 9–12 months, having ruptured his patella tendon just two minutes into his stint off the bench last Friday night. He had surgery on Tuesday.

Eseh, meanwhile, stands at six feet four and has over 40 career appearances to his name. A product of Wakefield Trinity’s youth system, he played 15 times for the West Yorkshire outfit and has had loan or dual reg spells at Barrow Raiders, Featherstone Raiders, Castleford Tigers, and Leeds Rhinos. However, he is yet to make his competitive debut for his parent club.

Elsewhere, Hull are also expected to have Liam Knight available next week. The Australian forward, 30, last played with Canterbury Bulldogs in the NRL last season and was due to land in the U.K. this Wednesday. He could make his club debut against the Leythers next Thursday night alongside Eseh, with Cartwright having two fresh middle options to go at.

Another player like Tiaki Chan and George Hirst, that makes you wonder why we signed them in the first place, if all we are going to do is loan them out to other clubs. 🤔

See how Eseh goes at Hull FC. They are really short so he should get plenty first team game time.
That's three off the salary cap. Eseh, Chan & Isa. Four if you count Hirst.
No doubt MP & Co will have taken account of when the injuries and suspensions arrive.
Good luck to Eseh and the others on loan.

I think it is two, I don’t think Chan counted against the cap. We are definitely making room for reinforcements though.

Were these players NOT reinforcements, that we have loaned out?

If they can't get into the team, then I doubt that we will be bringing in any other players, we will just save the money.

its called having a playing squad, and also have players who are developing (hopefully) into 1st team players. When Wigan signed both Eseh and Chan, whilst they were playing 1st team at their respective clubs, they werent ready for 1st team at Wigan which is a significant step up. When we have Thompson, Havard, Byrne, Dupree, Mago, Hill, Walters and Ellis who can all play prop, then Eseh is going to be well down the pecking order and unlikely to get game time. The reserve competition isnt yet fit for purpose, so the next best option is a loan where he will get good game time. Wigan will be in regular contact with him whilst on loan

re other options, we may see that we need a player in a different position and have something in the fire, but need to make savings to make it happen (just an option)

Can’t help but feel if Chan and Eseh have a long term future they would have broken into the first team by now.

I think Eseh has time on his side as he's only 21 and still got plenty potential, and at prop behind some experienced guys. The loan spell should help his development, but i suppose its whether he see's a future at Wigan as well as what Wigan see?

Chan a little older (24/25) so i would expect him to be making the 1st team if he was going to make it at Wigan

They'd have to be exceptional talents to break into our current forward roster.
Its only one game but Eseh looked something like a decent prospect during the Reserves v Castleford.
I'd also say that Walters, Makin and Wadsworth(?) looked better, so we will see.
Hirst is a decent capture, lets see how he goes this year.

We have a fair few on loan at various clubs, looks like the Academy lads will have to play up for regular runs in the Reserves?
