Salford boss blasts 'victim mentality' after staff are not paid before Hull KR hammering
Salford Red Devils were thrashed 42-0 by Hull KR on Thursday night.
Salford boss Paul Rowley blasted his side’s attitude after a record defeat and warned: “We can’t have a victim mentality.”
They crashed to their biggest ever Super League defeat to Hull KR - a 42-0 hammering - and have now lost all three games so far.
But the shambolic performance came after it emerged players had not been paid. Salford were taken over by new owners last week after months of turmoil.
But the squad went into the game still awaiting their expected salary.
Asked if that had been an issue, Rowley said: “It’s not an issue to me. We know the situation there.
It’s not a problem but if it’s been a distraction I won’t wear that personally because we’re here to just play rugby. We’ve got a million excuses this season already lined up and we can’t ignore the turmoil and the weight the lads have carried for some time.
“However, if you want to have a victim mentality in life let alone sport but more so in sport, people will just stand on you.
“You won’t get sympathy in this game so to have a victim mentality would be very unwise.
But there were elements that looked our way in our last two performances so the only way to get around that is to stick together and give your head a shake because otherwise it becomes long and tough. We’re better than that.”
Rowley said payments should be completed on Friday.
He said: “It’s tomorrow, but it’s not a concern. Everyone has been very clear and kept in the loop on the transitional process of it [money] crossing countries and this, that and the other.
“The transparency has been first-class and as far as I’m aware we’re still in February.”
On the performance, he added: “The foundation for any game has to start with defence. We were very fragile in defence and that reflects in your offence. There were a lot of errors in there. It comes from D. Our appetite and commitment to defend was a million miles off where it needs to be at any level.
“That wasn’t even Championship level. It was terrible.
“We’re very much in the trenches and to get out of the trenches we have to stick together.”
