Wigan Warriors' pack options assessed with second prop to depart

Wigan Warriors are set to lose two prop forwards at the end of the 2025 Super League season as things stand.

Wigan Warriors will lose Harvie Hill at the end of the 2025 Super League season, with the youngster set to join Hull FC on a multi-year deal.

The Black and Whites have fought off competition to land the highly-rated youngster for 2026 and beyond, while he is the second expected exit from Matt Peet’s forward pack. Ireland international Liam Byrne is also set to join Warrington Wolves at the conclusion of the current campaign, as reported by Warrington Guardian.

The departures open opportunities at the Brick Community Stadium, while Hill is looking to establish himself as a Super League regular, having made 16 appearances last season for the Cherry and Whites. The 21-year-old has featured three times so far this year, and was a standout across the club’s pre-season schedule. The rising youngster also impressed during last year’s World Club Challenge triumph over Penrith Panthers from the interchange bench, standing strong against some of the game's best forwards in the likes of James Fisher-Harris, Moses Leota and Isaah Yeo.

Hill would have likely been the next established forward from Wigan’s famous conveyor belt, but his departure now presents an opportunity for the next youngster in line.

Prop Kian McDermott was one of five academy graduates promoted to Wigan’s first-team for 2025, with the 19-year-old a highly-rated young forward within the game. Progressing through the club’s world-renowned youth system, he featured against Oldham in pre-season and later linked up with London Broncos on loan, where he made his competitive senior bow in first-team rugby league and has started under Mike Eccles.

The youngster could be the next big thing at Wigan, and likewise Harvey Makin may now get his chance with his hometown club. The 21-year-old made his Super League debut with London Broncos last year, and has had impressive loan spells with Bradford and Barrow.

While off-contract at the end of the year, the club does hold the option to extend Sam Eseh’s contract for 2026. The former Wakefield Trinity youngster is currently on loan at Hull, but Wigan may be keen to give the 21-year-old a chance - yet to make his debut for the Warriors.

Wigan could also potentially look at the transfer market, while an overseas quota spot is available following the retirement of Willie Isa earlier this year - with an off-field role confirmed at Chelsea FC.
