MATT PEET GAVE HIS THOUGHTS AS THE WARRIORS BEAT SALFORD RED DEVILS 54-0 AT THE BRICK COMMUNITY STADIUM ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

Speaking at full-time, Matt Peet said: “The game is a tricky one, a strange one for reasons out of our hands, but I think the players got the job done and we move on quickly.”

Peet’s side crossed for 10 unanswered tries through 7 different scorers on the afternoon, including a hat-trick for Centre Jake Wardle. On his sides attack, he said: “I think the points came because we applied ourselves and there was a few a few basic things in our game that we were looking for and the lads committed to them.

“Then there’s the challenge of not overplaying your hand as well, which maybe we fell into that trap a few times, but I understand that and I’m pleased with the lads.”

Praising the efforts of the opposition this afternoon, Peet added: “I thought they stood up well, they competed for large parts and they troubled us well at times with the ball, they were probably unlucky not to come away with at least one score.”

The game also saw a welcome return for Brad O’Neill, who made his first minutes since an ACL injury suffered eight months ago: “He’s been exemplary. He’s young, enthusiastic, committed – so it’s a good addition having him back I think today was just about being back out there with his mates and his family watching him.”

Summarising the result, Peet said: “We just had to get the job done today and I thought the players did it.”

The Warriors now enter a week without a game, giving them a 12-day turnaround until their Round 7 fixture against Hull KR: “This week we’ve just got a chance to some good training days and we’ll recover over the weekend.

“The players have responded well and we could push some a little bit harder on the training field [this week] and it’ll be another opportunity to do that – we are a Club who values practicing with intensity ,so it’s a good opportunity to do that.”

MATCH REPORT AS WIGAN WARRIORS TAKE VICTORY AGAINST SALFORD RED DEVILS AT THE BRICK COMMUNITY STADIUM.

A clinical performance saw the Warriors run in ten tries on Sunday afternoon to take victory in Round 6 of Betfred Super League action at home to Salford Red Devils.

Jake Wardle sealed his hat-trick with the Warriors’ final try of the game after Jai Field scored his second with Junior Nsemba, Liam Marshall, Bevan French, Sam Walters and Zach Eckersley also on the scoresheet. To the added joy of over 14,000 Warriors fans in attendance, Brad O’Neill returned to action for the first time in eight months after suffering an ACL injury last season.

Before Harry Smith kicked the game off, tributes were paid at The Brick Community Stadium to remember the lives of Wigan Athletic supporter Darren Orme and Wigan Warriors supporter Cooper Ronan Foster.

Minutes after ending his side’s first set with a trademark bombed kick, Smith would once again test the waters with his left boot as the swirling wind took his kick out of reach of the Salford defence and into the hands of Jacob Douglas, who caught the bouncing ball and dived over for what looked to be the game’s opening score. Upon video review, however, the majority of Wigan’s right flank – Douglas included – was seen to be offside from Smith’s kick and a No Try was given.

Despite a spell of Salford pressure following the decision, the Warriors’ strong defence would be quickly rewarded with the game’s first try. After some good metres made from Tyler Dupree, Junior Nsemba received the ball from Kruise Leeming at dummy half and stepped his way through the Salford line before passing to Jake Wardle, who scored in the corner. Unfortunately, the conditions were proving tricky for the kickers in the opening 10 minutes as the wind stopped Smith’s conversion attempt short of the posts.

The Red Devils once again responded well to being on the back foot and enjoyed repeat sets deep in Wigan territory, with an awkward looking tackle on Jai Field winning a goal line dropout before the wind again went against Smith, keeping his kick for touch in bounds. Field slowly got back up to his feet to help the Warriors defend before Smith’s next kick for touch made it – both celebrated by the Warriors supporters.

The Cherry and Whites were looking to shift the momentum as Wardle and Marshall came close on the final tackle, allowing their side to pin Salford back five metres out. The pressure from Salford’s perspective would be soon relieved, however, as Dupree was sent to the sin bin for a tackle on Nathan Connell.

Despite the man disadvantage, the Warriors would score twice in quick succession with near identical tries. Having just got onto the field, Sam Walters broke the line from inside his own half to release Field in for the score in the left corner, before Nsemba and Wardle combined once more for the centre to grab his second try of the game. Smith converted both to put the Warriors 16 points up.

Having just been welcomed back to the field for the first time in eight months by the home supporters, Brad O’Neill stretched his legs and took the Cherry and Whites into Salford territory with a solid first carry on his return to action.

More metres were made down the right-hand-side before the ball was moved back to the Warriors left flank, which was proving clinical as Nsemba got in on the act. Spinning free of his man, the back rower used his pace and power to crash over to the left of the sticks where Smith’s conversion was good.

With five minutes to go in the first half and Dupree replaced by Patrick Mago, Bevan French looked to have etched his name on the scoresheet. The Australian took possession from Esan Marsters and raced away from the chasing defenders to score, but Video Referee Marcus Griffiths adjudged French to have knocked on upon gathering the ball. It would be the last notable act of the half as Matt Peet’s side continued their firm stance in defence to go into the break 22 points to the good.

With some supporters still making their way back to their seats for the second half, Field would quickly raise those watching off their feet. The full back caught a short kick from Finley Yates and used his electric pace to bounce round the outside of the Salford defence, where he passed back infield for Marshall to score a brilliant fifth Warriors try of the afternoon. Smith was unable to convert from a difficult angle.

The Warriors were starting to run riot and proving too much for the Salford side on the day, as once again they ran over for a pair of tries in quick succession. French dummied his way through the line to dive over in front of the South Stand before Walters tapped the ball down for a scrappy score two minutes later, with Smith good from the first but wide with the second.

Walters’ influence on the game was growing as it went on, with the forward breaking the line once more to allow Dupree a chance to score against his former side. Despite Dupree being caught by the recovering defence, the Warriors had numbers over on the right flank where Liam Farrell found Zach Eckersley, whose try took the Wigan total to 40. Smith’s conversion was good from out wide.

With just under 15 minutes to go, the away side looked on course for their first points of the afternoon. Marsters did well to break and release Matty Foster through the middle, but a brilliant recovery and tackle from Smith stopped him short in his tracks. Salford would then have back-to-back attacking sets courtesy of a couple of Warriors errors in amongst an unsuccessful Captain’s Challenge by the Red Devils, but Peet’s side continued to stand strong at the back.

Minutes after a second Nsemba try was ruled out for a forward pass, Field would go near the full length of the field to score his second of the afternoon before Wardle sealed a hat-trick in similar fashion to round off the scoring. Smith was good with the boot for both tries to take the Warriors total over 50 on the day.

Salford looked to have finally cracked the Wigan defence through Connell with just 20 seconds to go, until a No Try was given for a knock-on upon video review. The hooter confirmed a 54-0 victory for the Warriors in front of over 14,000 at The Brick Community Stadium.

The Warriors set up a commanding lead in the opening forty with eight tries coming from Jack Farrimond, Taylor Kerr, Noah Hodkinson, two from Tom Forber and a Josh Cartwright hat-trick. Jack Farrimond converted four in the gusty conditions to send the home side in with the 40-0 advantage.

Wigan scored a further seven tries in the second forty from Noah Hodkinson, Finlay Yeomans, Harvey Makin and doubles from Jack Purtill and Kalum Rathbone to complete a huge 82-4 victory at Robin Park Arena.

The Warriors opened the scoring after 6 minutes as good hands right saw Finlay Yeomans delay the pass before sending Josh Cartwright over on the edge. From the touchline, Farrimond couldn’t add the extras against the wind and it sat 4-0 to the Warriors.

The lead was doubled just a few minutes later as Jack Farrimond linked up with George Hirst on the right edge to create space, the ball coming back inside to Farrimond to complete the move close to the uprights. The half-back converted his own score to make it 10-0.

Wigan extended their lead with two tries in three minutes, the first came as a good line from Taylor Kerr saw the loose forward collect and crash over before Josh Cartwright added his second of the afternoon on the right wing. Farrimond converted one of the two efforts to make it 20-0 in as many minutes.

Noah Hodkinson added Wigan’s fifth on 25 minutes, with Farrimond again causing problems in the middle he sent the full-back away, rounding the defence well to go over. The touchline conversion was off target as it sat 24-0.

Wigan hit the 30-mark just after the half hour as Jack Farrimond added the footwork to get past the Salford defence, finding Tom Forber on his inside to ease over under the sticks for a converted score.

Jaiden Drachenberg was shown a yellow card just before half-time for a high shot as Salford had a good attacking chance deep in Wigan territory. Ethan Fitzgerald was held-up over the line before a pass to the left wing went stray as Wigan survived. Wigan added a seventh before the turnaround as a good break by Josh Cartwright saw the winger send a kick inside for Forber to collect and cross for his second of the game.

Josh Cartwright had the final say of the half with his hat-trick score, collecting a kick to the corner to finish fantastically and send the Warriors in with the 40-0 lead.

The Warriors continued their attacking threat from the off in the second half as Noah Hodkinson crossed for his second on 42 minutes, collecting Farrimond’s kick on the last in the air before wrestling his way over. Farrimond converted for 46-0.

Jack Purtill extended the lead from the bench with a powerful carry seeing Wigan cross for their 10th try of the afternoon, again converted by Farrimond for 52-0.

Salford got their first points on the board shortly afterwards as Rafael Van Osselaer intercepted a pass from the Warriors to get over in the right corner. The touchline conversion was short from Gatcliffe and it was 52-4, however, Wigan responded with another score close to the sticks as impressive work from Shea O’Connor took the Warriors into a dangerous attacking position, as play shifted to Kalum Rathboneto crash over. Finlay Yeomans taking over kicking duties converted the score and it was 58-4.

Taylor Kerr thought he’d crashed over on the hour but a forward pass ruling denied the loose forward. Wigan did add another score on 65 minutes, however, as Finlay Yeomans added his name to the scoresheet, battling the defence to go over before converting his own score.

Wigan made it 70-4 going into the final 10 minutes as a break from Drachenberg on the left wing took Wigan deep into the Salford half, before Purtill collected to power through the tackle to score his second of the afternoon, converted by Yeomans.

Harvey Makin and Kalum Rathbone scored Wigan’s 14th and 15th tries of the game with minutes left on the clock, both converted from Yeomans to secure Wigan a huge 82-4 victory on Sunday afternoon.

I really don't want to be moaning and while I understand that he has to be careful with wording as not to disrespect the opposition team but I'd be spitting feathers at our performance.

If we had played Warrington and played like that we would have lost heavily. We where sloppy with the ball in hand and even defensively where not great and a most experienced team wouldn't have been held to zero.

We had some good toys but also some very sloppy ones.

In short if your happy with that performance be prepared to lose to hull and Saints.by a cricket score.

And lost all those 3 matches by a grand total of 5 points.
One a DG in GP, Hull with the switching of combinations due to injuries with players in critical positions and a loss to Leeds by an accidental headed ball.
We weren’t brilliant early doors last year after Penrith and nothing is won or lost in March, when so much class and potential are still to be seen at more crucial stages of the season.

Well that's one way to spin it. A different way would be that we were brilliant in defense against Leigh and were the only ones who created anything. Clunky in attack but certainly nothing unusual for the first game of the season. We were then red hot in Vegas, 2nd half against Huddersfield in victory and again against Hull until injuries struck. Leeds, we weren't at our best but, flukiest try of the century aside, would still have won. We then trounced Salford 54-0 without getting out of first gear.

We may not be at our imperious best but, to paraphrase Mark Twain, the rumors of our demise have been greatly exaggerated

I am looking forward with confidence to the end of the year, but I think we have to be on our toes. Someone suggested nothing is won or lost in March. In fact, we lost the chance to defend the Cup in March, so that game had genuine consequences. All that said, I think Peet’s public comments are fine. We will find out in the run of 5 fixtures starting with HKR how many adjustments we need to make. I suspect we will be fine and have seen nothing to suggest that our fate isn’t still in our own hands. Play to our potential and no one will beat us.
