The Warriors are set to be without the England prop for a period.

Luke Thompson is set for a spell on the sidelines after Wigan Warriors received a significant injury blow.

The prop was a notable absentee from the Wigan squad for their Grand Final rematch with Hull KR on Friday. Thompson, the England had played in the Warriors' victory over Salford last time out and has been an ever present this year.

However, he was taken off during that game and it has now emerged that the 29-year-old picked up an injury in that game.

After undergoing scans, it has emerged that Thompson has suffered a grade two calf strain that is expected to keep him on the sidelines for three to four weeks.

It's a big blow for the Warriors. Thompson is expected to return at Magic Weekend when the Warriors play Warrington but he will miss games against league leaders Hull KR, arch rivals St Helens and Hull FC, who are currently second on the Super League table.

Wigan have just welcomed back Brad O'Neill from an ACL injury and are hopeful winger Abbas Miski will be able to play against Rovers after a knee injury has disrupted his campaign.

There other long-term absentees are Ethan Havard, who hasn't played this year due to a hamstring injury, and Adam Keighran, who still has some time to go before he'll be able to return from a knee injury suffered in the Challenge Cup defeat to Hull FC last month.

Wigan are currently third in Super League, four points behind Hull KR before Friday's trip to Craven Park.

luckily we are still well stocked at prop, and time for players to step up and fill the gap left by Thompson and Havard both being out

i think we'll go Byrne and Dupree to start, with Hill, Mago and Walters as the rotation, so its still not a bad prop rotation, and probably better than most other clubs can dream of. We also have the option of Ellis, but that leaves us short at 13

now, onto the challenge, if the rumours (dont think either has been confirmed) of Byrne and Hill both leaving are true, that looks a very different backup for next season, but thats a conversation for another day

Definitely more time on the pitch for Paddy Mago!

I am often perplexed that some players on the bench only get 10 mins on the pitch. I think if you have a squad of 17 then you should maximise your resources.

But, there again, I'm just a simple man!

The issue for Mago has always been his fitness. He can come on and add a lot in attack due to his size and offloading ability, but once he's done a few carries and a couple of tackles, he looks absolutely done.

i think his fitness improved massively after his 1st season. yes he provides impact, but is also capable of doing longer than some of the stints he does
