Warrington Wolves dealt huge injury blow with star set for surgery

Warrington Wolves have been dealt a major blow with one of the club’s star players set to require surgery which will lead to a lengthy lay-off.

Wire have been hit and miss so far in 2025 with Sam Burgess’ side sitting just outside the play-off positions, however, they have made the Challenge Cup semi-finals.

A win over St Helens in the quarter-finals booked them a tie in the semis against Leigh Leopards, set to be played at St Helens, but they meet the Leopards this weekend in Super League

Warrington will travel to Leigh on Saturday knowing that a win will see them leapfrog their opponents and move into the top six. They’ll have to do that without one of their star players though as Wire head coach Sam Burgess has confirmed that a key man is set for surgery which will rule him out for a period of eight to ten weeks.

That man is England and club captain George Williams with the talisman playmaker suffering an ankle injury that will likely rule him out of the Challenge Cup Final, should Warrington make it that far.

The Challenge Cup Final will be played on June 7th, which is less than eight weeks away, so it’s very unlikely Williams would be if available if Wire make it that far.

Sam Burgess had revealed the news that Williams would go under the knife in his presser, explaining to BBC Radio Merseyside the extent of the blow.

Williams is set for surgery tomorrow (Thursday) and the recovery timeline will begin from then. Should Williams’ recovery be on the longer end of the suggested timescale then he would not be available until the end of June, making the Round 16 home game against Hull FC a possible target.

Marc Sneyd will now run the team with options such as Oli Leyland and Leon Hayes, who has been suffering from an injury, the likely candidates to partner him.

Stefan Ratchford would also be an option whilst young full-back Cai Taylor-Wray would ordinarily be in consideration, however, he suffered an injury playing in the reserves last week

Will never forgive him for not coming back to us but sad to see him injured. He's playing really well this season. Big blow for the cup but this injury layoff should keep him fresh for the test matches at the end of the season.

I think he's gone pretty well for Wire this season, and they certainly haven't got anyone near his class to replace him right now.

they are on the fence about Burgess at the minute, and think he only has an aura about him, and not necessarily got the rugby brain to get they where the fans want them to be. They arent calling for him to be sacked but i think after a good 1st season in charge, they arent seeing the progress they hoped for, and dont see them at the top table with Wigan and KR this season

They arent calling for him to be sacked but i think after a good 1st season in charge, they arent seeing the progress they hoped for, and dont see them at the top table with Wigan and KR this season

Let’s say this,yes he did have an aura (and still does)but is this enough to make a great coach?im far from convinced if I’m honest and I wonder if he would have had the degree (relatively I know) success if he had had to grasp the nettle like Powell did and clear the deadwood out,that for me that squad had gone very stale I do wonder,but that is just me.

Trouble with Warrington fans is they have very little patience the monkey of not winning the big one has become king king like instead of just letting the squad evolve they’re always on the lookout for the next big thing,the latest being Snyed after it wasn’t it seems Williams.

i agree, re his aura. There is no doubt about that, and that having an aura, doesnt make a great coach. What will be interesting in the slightly longer term is how this impacts his stock in Australia, as there appeared to be a lot of noise about him getting a gig over there, even after a decent start over here last season. Now that honeymoon period is over, will he be able to demonstrate he has coaching ability, and not just players in awe of him

on paper Wire have a decent squad, and are now in a position where they are also putting some time and emphasis on the academy, but that will take time to reap its rewards. there is no coincidence that Wigan, Saints and Leeds have had the best academies for years, and are the clubs who have won the GF the most

re the GF, yes, it really is weighing heavy on them from a fans perspective. I work in Warrington, and although i'm not in the office every day like i used to be, it is a monkey they want to shake off. Its probably a bit like Liverpool when they went those years without winning but seeing Utd and then City winning, and to get that off their back must have been massive
