The Tigers are set for another signing, and the Reds are preparing for another departure.

The saga surrounding Chris Atkin looks set to come to an end today with Castleford Tigers closing in on a deal to sign the Salford Red Devils playmaker. All Out Rugby League understands progress has been made in recent days and the final details are now being worked on that will see Atkin join the Tigers with immediate effect.

The Tigers have been keen to land a deal for Atkin for several weeks but have been able to come to an arrangement with the Reds, who have been keen to keep players at the club following previous sales. However, they have now decided to strike a deal with Castleford, which is thought to have been agreed over the weekend, and the final touches are now being worked through to ensure the deal is signed off.

It would be another mid-season acquisition for Danny McGuire, who has already welcomed Brad Singleton, Tom Amone, Jordan Dezaria and Hugo Salabio to his squad in recent weeks.

But it will be yet another departure from Salford, with Paul Rowley's squad being decimated as their ongoing issues continue. So far, Marc Sneyd, Kallum Watkins, Tim Lafai, Deon Cross and Singleton have all moved on with Salford's sustainability cap still in place.

Atkin will provide depth in a number of positions after proving himself to be a good utility player during his time at Salford, playing halfback, hooker and fullback.

The 32-year-old broke through at Swinton Lions and eventually earned a move to Hull KR midway through the 2017 season. He joined Salford in 2020 and has made 110 appearances for the club.

But he now appears likely to join the Tigers and could be in contention to play when they take on Wakefield Trinity at Magic Weekend. Castleford are currently tenth in Super League with two wins from nine games after they beat Huddersfield Giants at the weekend.
