WIGAN WARRIORS WOMEN WILL FACE LEEDS RHINOS WOMEN IN THE BETFRED WOMEN’S CHALLENGE CUP SEMI-FINAL AT YORK’S LNER COMMUNITY STADIUM.

Having beaten Barrow Raiders and London Broncos to nil in the group stages, the Warriors maintained their perfect record against Cardiff Demons to secure their place in the last four. Denis Betts’ side scored 18 tries in a 96-0 quarter-final win to move to within 80 minutes of the final at Wembley Stadium.

The Warriors will now take on Leeds Rhinos, who beat Huddersfield Giants 38-18, at York’s LNER Community Stadium on Saturday 10 May. The tie will be played before Hull KR meet Catalans Dragons in the Men’s semi-final showdown.

Elsewhere in the semi-finals, York Valkyrie will face St Helens Women’s in a repeat of the Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

WIGAN WARRIORS WOMEN ADVANCED TO THE BETFRED WOMEN’S CHALLENGE CUP SEMI-FINAL FOLLOWING A 96-0 WIN OVER CARDIFF DEMONS.

The Warriors scored 18 tries in a resounding win at Robin Park Arena to move 80 minutes away from the Women’s Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.

Four tries from Anna Davies saw the winger surpass 200 Wigan points whilst a first half Mary Coleman hat-trick brought up more than than 100 points in Cherry and White.

The Warriors scored twice in the opening seven minutes to build a firm platform for the tie. First Williams powered over to the right of the sticks for her first Wigan try after Foubister initially charged down a kick, before Davies grounded in the corner on her first start this season.

A fine Warriors break led by Davies and Wilson eventually led to the winger scoring her second in the corner after Foubister’s cut-out pass. Powerful carries Shaniah Power, Speakman and Coleman moved Wigan downfield from the restart, before Jones raced clear on the left side to extend the lead to 18-0 after 15 minutes.

Cardiff failed to prevent Williams from breaking through the line from the restart as her inside pass allowed Coleman to touch down a fifth between the sticks. Despite getting Derbyshire into touch, Cardiff were forced into a drop out in the next set which led to Coleman powering through a gap to double her points total. Foubister added four points from the tee to increase the lead to 30-0.

The Demons experienced a rare attack opportunity after intercepting a Warriors pass. However, a kick on the last was claimed by Wilson, who accelerated more than 80m to add a seventh Warriors try. Having defended two complete Cardiff sets, Wigan turned defence to attack when Marsh released Coleman to complete a first half hat-trick.

The Warriors added a ninth try immediately from the restart when Eva Hunter raced clear down the left wing before touching down behind the posts. Foubister kicked her sixth goal of the tie to put Wigan 48-0 ahead at the break.

Having stood firm for the opening five minutes, Cardiff were unable to match Derbyshire’s speed as the winger raced through the middle to score. Shortly after, Banks picked out Davies on the opposite side to set the winger up for a hat-trick score in the corner.

The Warriors were rewarded further when a fantastically timed line saw Banks burst over after taking in possession 30m out. The points total was increased three minutes later when Jones dummied through the Demons defence for her second to make the score 68-0 after Foubister’s successful kick.

A neat one-two between Power and Banks led to a second try for the half-back before Wilton showed determination to get through three tackles to score next to the posts. With the kick from Foubister, the Warriors led 80-0 with 14 minutes to go.

Davies grounded a fourth in the corner after a quick play the ball pass from Banks before the Warriors applied further pressure to the Cardiff defence after a strong carry from Jones. Wilton worked the ball wide to Wilson, who set Foubister up on the left edge to score her first try of the tie before adding the extras.

After denying the Demons points following a late attack, Derbyshire claimed the kick on the last before running the full length to score her second. Foubister added the extras on the hooter to make the final score 96-0.
