New cricket ground
Wigan Council has applied for lottery funding to build a new cricket ground and invited Lancashire Cricket Club to move from Old Trafford.
Given the crowds for county cricket I'd be surprised if it would need to be have a capacity much in excess of 15,000.
Seeing as so many of us don't like sharing with football at the JJB, maybe a move to this new ground is just what we need. There's going to be a hotel on thie site, too, which would be handy, given the long distances SL fans increasingly have to travel.
And I guess the Latics would probably still let us play our couple of big games a season at the JJB.
What does everyone think?

At least our wingers would have plenty of space to run along, and our inability to do 40/20 kicks wouldn't matter too much in a round/hexagonal pitch...im_a_cuckoo posted:

Re: New cricket ground
Apart from the shape of the pitch, I personally would be against this for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I didn't realise that many people were against us sharing with the Latics. Ok, the pitch is a mess, but otherwise we've got one of the best grounds in SL and we should be proud of it. Moving out would just give the Latics fans even more to go on about, claiming we're not big enough for their stadium anymore. I don't really want their "kindness" in allowing us to play a couple of games per year at the JJB, we are not 2nd class to them. Our average attendance isn't too far away from 15000, so we'd be a bit squashed on quite a few occasions to fit everyone in. And finally, given that our owner and the Latics owner is also the stadium owner (and that neither club has sole rights to the JJB) I can hardly see Mr Whelan wanting to move one of his big money-earners out of his stadium.im_a_cuckoo posted:

I'm perfectly happy where we are now. It's a nice big stadium with great views of the pitch, and one of the best RL grounds in the country as befits (what should be) one of the best teams in the country.

I agree but I didn't think Whelan owned the JJB. I don't know... :eh:Fraggle posted:Apart from the shape of the pitch, I personally would be against this for a couple of reasons. Re: New cricket ground
Ultimately the whole JJB empire is him, somewhere along the way. The stadium is officially owned by Whelco Holdings, in which Mr Whelan holds a controlling stake.Champions posted:
