Not going due to transport difficulties

On another note, an interesting issue raised on Boots 'n' All regarding the salary cap with the fact : Both NRL grand finalists have not made the play-offs the following year, and this has happened for the last 3 years

They also use that as a reason not to have relegation because it allows other teams to take a few risk when buying players and using younger talent.

I'm very nervously waiting for our first game. My Eels are going to have to pull out a massive performance against this year's minor premiers, Melbourne. We'll not only have to defeat them but also history as well, an 8th placed team has never beaten 1st placed. My fingers are well and truly crossed.

With all the teams being so close together on the ladder throughout the year it should make for a great finals series.

That is such a misnomer re the salary cap working in the NRL.The reason the cap works is simply because many years prior to the cap ever being introduced they invested time and large amounts of money in junior development. Hence, there are more than enough quality players to prevent any club monopolising talent. Sorting the supply side then introducing a cap is common sense. When you introduce the cap without sorting the supply it is crazy (Britain).

So you have lots of great players in the NRL and what actually happens is that winning the GF weakens you for the following year. The reason being, the winning clubs pay out bonuses and this has a knock on effect for the next year or two or even three as you have to balance your books.

As for the play offs. I support Parra but the lack of front rowers will kill us. I want St george to win but the Broncos are hot. The Broncos will face Melbourne in the final and I tip the Broncos to beat them. Cantebury have injury problems as I recall.

I won't give away any scores as some of you will probably want to watch the games but if you get the Raiders v Bulldogs game over there it's definitely worth watching.

I'm not so sure we'll have any problem in that area. Melbourne don't have the biggest forward pack in the game and we also have Nathan Cayless making a very unexpected return and Michael Vella is supposed to be playing as well. Add Josh Cordoba to that and our forwards are looking quite solid.

Where Melbourne are lacking in defense is out wide. If we spread the ball and use our wingers and centres that's where i think we'll get the points. With Jarryd Hayne and Eric Grothe out on the wings we have the talent to do it.

I think our game will just be a case of whether Parra come out fully prepared or not, we can beat anyone on our day

 Well I know nowt :D

I thought the Broncos would be unstoppable after recent weeks but St George killed them.I wonder if Bennett has been there too long? Cannot see them sacking him though.

Dv's Girl what are your thoughts on Brian Smith. Is something lacking. He seems a good technical coach but is never successful.

Sorry i've been hiding away wallowing over our more than 'controversial' loss to Melbourne last weekend
:(

I'm a huge fan of Brian Smith. I was extremely sad when i found out he was leaving Parra. He is the best thing to have happened to our club in a long time in my opinion and things are no longer quite the same. Smith has the ability to take a no name player and turn them into a rep. I'm not quite sure why the results never really go his way, maybe he broke a very large mirror in the past. I do believe that the problems at Parra were not related to him but rather to Denis Fitzgerald, the same person who is responsible for Jason Taylor leaving us, and for us signing a coach who has shown some luck but very little talent. As much as i dislike Newcastle, i really hope Brian Smith gets his premiership next year so he can prove everyone wrong once and for all. [/quote]

Not sure Parra have been run correctly for a very long time. I cannot recall us ever having a solid recruitment policy. Bringing through a whole team of youngsters etc from within the club and winning the NRL will never happen at any club IMO. You need that quality / that added experience bringing in from elsewhere. Parra never seem to compete for major signings. Shame really :(
