Could we not pay our players £1 a year... then employ them also as community coahces earning £400,000+ each? or at JJB warehouse for similar amounts?

Im sure working outside of rugby league doesnt count on the cap.

All those types of loopholes were closed by the RFL ages ago.

6.7.1 Where an employee of the club is employed in a capacity other than as a player, and plays one or more first team games (excluding friendlies) in a season then he will be considered

the legal way to pay a player without it being counted on the salary cap is a transfere fee! lets say leeds sell us a player for a hundred grand we pay leeds two hundred grand for him and he pockets half for himself. or simply slip him an envolope full of money every now and then  .

If only it were that simple. If Wigan paid £200K to Leeds and only £100K showed up on their accounts I am sure the RFL would be asking where the rest was!

Likewise if Whelan gave a player cash payment from his own personal bank account I am sure the RFL would consider it the club paying the player as DW owns the club.

The only legitimate way to make the salary cap money go further is tax avoidance which as far as I am aware con only be done with overseas players via Offshore Benefit Trusts. Wigan have not done this in the past as there is a question mark over whether the Inland Revenue will start to consider them liable for tax which would hit the club with a tax bill.

Some clubs do use the mechanism despite this risk.

Would buying things for the players count as "payments" I think Wigan might have offered players a house and a car to "sweeten" the deal, would that be count on the salary cap or not?

we need to take a leaf out of st helens' book because there is no way they could stay in the salary cap with 10,000 a week and 20 international players. whatever they do has worked!
