good win didnt look like they were interested till the 2nd half some spells of amazing rugby from wigan tho. think Calderwood and Leuluai played really well

I thought we were also in NL1 for the first 65 minutes! Good response, and there were a few really impressive moments, but some absolute rubbish as well. Credit to Wilkes, James, Beswick and Smith who all put in decent performances against us, Mark Smith in particular seems to have moved on from his Wigan days and was far better than the again-dismal Millard.

Bailey, Leuluai and Hock were the most impressive for me, plus spells from Lockers, Calderwood and Fletcher. Richards took his tries well but otherwise was again very quiet. Barrett was good in patches and absent in others.

Without ANY comments about obesssion, and other stuff, what did you think of Ashton today.

I didn't think he did too badly. He saved a try when Widnes player was held up over the line, he was (more or less) always seen in or around the support of the attack.

He also made some good metres forward, plus that bit of dancing footwork (or twinkle toes) that lead to one of our tries was very cool.

On a rating of 1 - 10, I would give him a 7.

Ganson was shocking by the way!!!!!!!

I'd say 6, his positioning was out on a few occasions and he wasn't there in support as often as he should have been. Once or twice Barrett and Fletcher made breaks with no-one there, and you would expect the fullback should somewhere around.

I don't think he was too bad. He missed stuff both ways but I think Wigan got the better of the 50/50 decisions.

Fraggle, are you suggesting that Ashton should have been in support in EVERY break? Aren't you asking a bit much?

What about the other players?

One question though, and that is, please explain to me, why people are questioning his positional play and what it means.

To me, he looks in a good position every time the ball his kicked to him, and he is (usually) as safe as anything.

Well it was very poor BUT in many ways it was a good bet it would be. Hence, why you sometimes need to just spruce the team up a little. I think Prescott desperately needs a break for example.

He's not expected to make the drives, so what else should he be doing? Remember a couple of years ago, Newton and Rads used to score for fun by both supporting the players with the ball, and really I think the fullback should be expected to be leading the second phase attack. The other players should also be there, but we had a few moments of one-out rugby and that never ever achieves anything.

It's really when the players are running up the middle or the ball is kicked through the middle. On a couple of occasions others had to move in from the wing/centre positions because he wasn't where the ball was going. Rads was a master at that, Ashton is still learning but he got saved a little bit today, although he also positioned himself superbly at other times, such as being involved when Beswick knocked-on over the line.

We had a real scare today IMO. Thank god the Widnes defence collapsed somewhat for 10 minutes and Hock seemed impressive in that spell, hence his MoM.

Wigan could have done better, won ugly IMO but we're on the road to Wembley!
